Nintendo could play it either way. The obviously don't need to be the ones that start the next generation, they are currently making heaps of money as is, but perhaps they will take the kick-them-while-they-are-down mentality.

However your assertion that the Wii is underpowered due to Nintendo running out of R+D funding is fallacious. It was an intentional design decision, not one forced on them by circumstance.

Agreed 100% on your first statements.  That's exactly the point I was making:  go in for the kill while they can.

However regarding the last statements, I never intended to insinuate that Nintendo couldn't have also gone more powerful if they had wanted to; they have billions in the bank, after all.  I was just pointing out that clearly power was not their focus or where they spent money.

Ah, I read it the other way.  It certainly would have been a very big risk to go HD and motion control in the one move, I can only imagine what could have happened to the PS3 if Sony they had done that, given the evidence proffered that their motion controller was actually in R+D for years before the launch of the PS3.

It's way to early for this Gen to End, and in no way shape or form should any company release a new console until the PS2 is is dead....I mean we can't have 3 generations of consoles all being sold at the same time, it's just ridiculous.

To be honest, I feel like this Gen is finally kicking into gear and were getting better and better games....I reckon we should give this Gen another 5 years, make the next wave of consoles release some time in 2015-2016.

Wait till Sony or Microsoft annouce a new console.

If I were Nintendo I'd just keep making games for Wii.

Should I have a new idea with new values I'd toss some resources there, when my competitors make their moves, then I'd be the guy everyone cheered for right after they were done doing their thing, cause everyone was really waiting for me.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.

The Hunt Begins 4/20/2010 =D

It'll probably be something along the lines of:

  • 512 MB GDDR5 on a 64bit bus with 2* 2Gb chips yielding about 35-40GB/S bandwidth
  • CBHD/BR based optical drive with no movie playback and around 18-25MB/S transfer speed.
  • 1-1.5B transistor CPU/GPU combined with embedded framebuffer of say 20MB or so and that'll be about 2-3* the performance of current generation 360/PS3 levels produced on the 32/28nm process at a ~100-150mm^2 area
  • Power = 35-50W
  • 2-16GB flash storage
  • External power brick
  • USB3.0
  • Wireless N
  • Blu Tooth

It'll be extremely well balanced hardware capable of outputting Nintendo games @ a clean 60FPS 1080P and everyone else will probably go 720P @30FPS for better graphics. Likely the CPU will be AMD X86 fusion with 320-400SP.

I can see your point about the PS2.  And while I agree that this gen could easily go on longer (just like Microsoft and Sony would like it to) I disagree that it will be 2015 before we see a brand-new system out... someone will make a move before then, and once they do the competition will follow thereafter.

There's not a chance in hell that Nintendo will sell one of their systems at a loss, ever. *Ever*.

Nintendo Network ID: Cheebee   3DS Code: 2320 - 6113 - 9046

Realistically, Nintendo’s system will  probably be fairly small, energy efficient and be inexpensive enough to be sold for $300 or less without taking much of a loss. While it is entirely possible (and possibly likely) that Nintendo would return to the price to performance strategy behind the Gamecube (which would result in a system that was substantially more powerful than the HD consoles by 2011/2012), Sony and Microsoft would have very little difficulty surpassing their performance; especially if they’re willing to release later or produce a larger, less energy efficient, and more expensive system.

Just a clarification are you talking about performance per watt or total power consumption?

Basically, overall energy consumption ...

Nintendo's next home console won't come out until 2012 at the absolute earliest. I expect it'll come in 2013, personally.
