Forums - Nintendo - So, megaflop GTA: CW for DS reached 1M

I like how people are refusing to admit the success of a game that sells 1 million units. So, yes, it didn't sell fantastically. It was also a goofy niche title with gameplay significantly changed from that of the rest of the [successful] franchise, and it was also the cheapest modern GTA game made yet. 1m for that was easily more profit than the millions and millions more that GTA IV pulled, so it doesn't really matter if it "only" pulled 1m. That's still a huge achievement.

"terrible for a GTA game and considering the userbase, not that incredible"

Did you look at the sales for the GTA games before III? They were terrible as well considering the userbase for the PS1.

GTA 1 sold 2.3 Million

GTA 2 sold 3.4 Million

Both sold more, on less userbase. So what's the excuse now?

At that point top-down GTA was fresh, hip, and new.

Then 3-D GTA blew it out of the water.

Now top-down GTA is considered "retro," a rehash, and a step backwards into the 90's.  Most of the casual/mainstream GTA fans have moved on to the 3rd dimension.  It's not the type of IP that has retro fans that want to see it go back to its roots, like Mario or Sonic or Mega Man or whatever.

They made a really awesome game for a really niche audience.  I'm not sure why.  But it was awesome.  I thought it was a great mish-mash of both the 2-D and 3-D styles.  It was basically only made for nerds like me.  I loved it more than GTA 1 and 2, which I also loved.  The only bad top-down GTA was on the GBA, but it was licensed out to a shovelware developer, and I have no idea why.

Userbase size has nothing to do with it, if the almighty PS1 and PS2 can't even have one of the top 10 best-selling games of all time.

exactly!  "retro, a rehash, and a step backwards into the 90's" is practically word for word what i was thinking when NSMB wii was announced.  no wonder that thing has yet to reach a million...

Then try top down GTA never sold over 10 million. Full 3D GTA and 2D Mario have multiple times.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

You realize, you're comparing "rehashes" of games (NES Mario) that sold 20-40 million, to the older GTA's which did 2-3 million?

When the DS game had been out for the length that the PSP game has, it had sold roughly twice as many units.

So, anyone claiming that these sales are low (which they aren't) and that it's the DS's fault is a fanboy.

lol at bringing PSP sales into it. A late port, on a system with less than half as many units sold worldwide. And you don't have to be a fanboy to see that the sales are "low" for a GTA game. Be it 2D or 3D.

@Bamboleo
Correct me if i'm wrong, but doesn't the PS2 have more 2 Million sellers than the DS has 1 Million sellers?

Not really.  GTA 1&2 sold around 1-2 million a piece.

It's actually right where 2D GTA games are at sales wise.

Edit:  Wait where are people getting 2-3 million from for GTA 1 and 2?  Are you combining all releases?

My first post in this thread (~115 replies ago) was a satire on the eventual reactions of gamers who would claim bomb.

I got tons of that and more.

I just want to point out that handheld attach rates for software have always been lower than consoles, so it isn't really fair to compare the two. And if we want to talk about the PS2, I can revive the thread which explained its 2500 flops, but we don't wanna go down that road again.

Leatherhat on July 6th, 2012 3pm. Vita sales:"3 mil for COD 2 mil for AC. Maybe more. "  thehusbo on July 6th, 2012 5pm. Vita sales:"5 mil for COD 2.2 mil for AC."

I was planning on leaving the thread for good, but i may aswell correct you.

GTA 1 sold 2.3 Million
GTA 2 sold 3.4 Million

So no, it isn't.

Install base does not magically make niche games into mainstream.

Full 3D GTA is mainstream, not top down. Compare sales of the top down GTA games, and then you can see how well this game did.

Looking at how many niche games failed to sell millions on the Wii should be enough proof, but sadly some will never get it.

1) Where are you getting those numbers

2) Do you know GTA 1&2 came out on multiple platforms.

I'm guessing your combining PC and Console sales here.

Excuses so far:

Top Down game
Sold more than PSP Version

my fav : Niche game, lol

How is top down or 2D an excuse? Most people just don't want that type of GTA. What if they turned the FF main series into a SRPG like Fire Emblem, completey elimnating any exploration and it's just story and battle based. Do you think it would sell as much then?

Halo Wars gives you the high 5.
