Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Responds To Nintendo 3DS Announcement

I think a lot of people are forgeting about what might happen with Sony marketing 3d as the second coming and the Nintendo shows the 3DS to the public as a 3D hand held with no need for glasses of a new TV, effectively Sony would of indirectly marketed it for them.

The difference is the PS3 would look like the better it can do everything machine.. why get a DS when the PS3 does everything and does it much better?

That's there goal.. why do you think PS MOVE is coming out, why get a wii when the ps3 has it and does it better? 3D gaming was originally just going to be the PS3 that pushes it, but nintendo appears to want to push 3d gaming as well.

What was Sony supposed to do huh, stick 3D TV Sets on top of their PS3 models?

Sony will be first to the market with 3D gaming. Sony have been the ones pushing for 3D for a long time now.

Don't act like that isn't the truth and all of a sudden Nintendo are the 3D gaming pioneers.

You do also know there are TVs releasing that require no glasses right?

By the way, I still think this new DS is absolutely fantastic and I will be picking it up on day 1, especially if this E3 showing blows my mind like I expect it to.

No actually Nvidia are the first to market with effective 3D gaming for home based systems. Nintendo will be the first to market with handheld 3D gaming (in an effective form) as well. Sony will be behind the 8 ball for the remainder of the generation because whilst the PS3 can do 3D, it cannot do effective 3D as it currently exists. It would be a gimmick with only a select few titles supporting the technology.

According to who? I thought it was already established the PS3 can effectively do 3D, and very well too.. Will it be a gimmick? Probably, but with the 3DS being announced, I honestly doubt sony will let nintendo take the spot light on 3d gaming. Since they are pushing 3d tvs this summer.

Didn't Sony call the DS a gimmick?, I bet Nintendo hopes this ones turns out just the same!
Talking of demographics, designing a handeld for 8-9 year olds with dual screen and stylus control makes even less sense than 3D.

They never called the DS a gimmick..also, it wont since SONY has announced long ago that the Playstation 3 will offer 3d gaming/movies this year..

although the need for glasses is there. If a 3d tv costs that much, I can only imagine how much a 3DS will cost with a screen that can do 3D without glasses, if tv's with glasses cost well over 2k.

Gimmick is exactly what Sony called the DS.

""With the DS, it’s fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen,” Harrison continued. “But I fear that it won’t have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick – so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that.”"

3D is easy to do on a handheld, multi-layer LCD technology has been around for a while. It won't be that expensive to do.

Please bring me a source for your little quote, if 3d is so hard to implement on an HD TV, what makes you think its simple to impliment on a handheld?

@Pesmerga515

They didn't mock, they simply said "its an interesting idea to bring 3d to handhelds, but based on our market research not many people are too interested in 3d gaming on a handheld, and they don't see a young audience going ape shit over 3d gaming on a handheld"

SONY is the one who started the whole 3d gaming thing to begin with, so before you claim they are "going to rip off" nintendo please do some research.. 3D GAMING is coming to PLAYSTATION 3 this year.

The difference is, 3D gaming on 3D TVs was a no brainer. It's the first thing I thought about when the 3DTVs were announced. Portable 3D gaming is a completely different egg to crack.

I have read on Engadget that it's most likely using a technology developed by Sharp Corporation that they have stated would be "Impractical on HDTV displays".

IPHONE already offers portable 3d games though.. so how is it a different egg to crack?

By the time the 3DS is released (whihc will likely be more than $149 at launch, I am assuming $200)

the PS3 should be less than $299..

Got to include a tv which the masses will not be able to afford and the need? for the glasses. In time these will go down in price, but how long will that take?

Do you want to play Uncharted 2 in 3D at 1280 by 540 resolution with additional input latency due to the fact that the TV has to do the scaling? Thats one of the better cases, pretty much anything running at 720P natively is out of the question, only Sony games which render at the higher 1080P vertical resolution are even applicable for this technology.

Tease.

The iPhone displays the same image to both eyes. You have to move the iPhone in order to observe the 3d effect.

The Sharp technology puts a different image in each eye. The 3d image will appear without any movement.

Totally different technologies and the results are very different.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.
