Forums - Nintendo - I've never played Pikmin. What's the deal?

Unlike other posters in this thread and critics, I actually prefer Pikmin 1 to Pikmin 2. They are both great games though. I  found the limited number of days in Pikmin really exciting and it added a sense of urgency which I enjoyed. i remember the first time I played through, I had about an hour of Pikmin time left when I finally got the last part and it really felt like an accomplishment when I got it.

Personally for Pikmin 3 I hope they add back the day limit, but expand it to something like 60 or 90, and then have an option to restart from 10 day intervals or so if you realize you wont have time. I did enjoy multiplayer modes in Pikmin 2, and hope those return with online in Pikmin 3.

killeryoshis is right it is a fun puzzle strategy game. I haven't played Pikmin 3 yet but I've done Pikmin 1 & 2 and they were both similar. Essentially you command an ant-like army of Pikmin who help you get off a planet that you crash on.

In Pikmin 1 (P1) you are a small humanoid and you crash your cargo spaceship on a strange planet. Your ship breaks into 30 pieces during the crash and you have 30 (game) days worth of air to find the parts and rebuild your ship or you die. At the main crash site you find little carrot like creatures that you call Pikmin they grow in the ground and you pluck them. These pikmin come in three colors and each color has a different ability. They follow you and your commands so you can use them to carry your ship parts and fight monsters. Each colored Pikmin has a onion shape factory ship that generates more Pikmin sprouts from flowers and dead monsters that your Pikmin collect and kill. The factory ship also safely stores unneeded Pikmin and protects the workers you return to it before nightfall.

In the game you need to manage your different pikmin and increase their numbers while you hunt for parts when you find a part you throw Pikmin at it until there is enough to carry it back to base. Sometimes there are puzzles you need to solve, sometimes you need to throw your Pikmin at a monster that is guarding an area if you do it wrong they get eaten so you need to keep building your army. The game can get hectic at times because each game day is only 15 minutes long IIRC. If you don't get your Pikmin back to their factory ship by the end of the day they'll die so you have to work fast. At first the game is easy but after you generate an army of 100 Pikmin it is hard to keep track of all them and keep them working. If you get too ambitious it is easy to lose Pikmin A lot of people complained about the hectic time frame in Pikmin 1 so they made Pikmin 2 a timeless adventure.

In Pikmin2 you have fixed your ship and returned home only to find the company you work for is on the verge of bankruptcy. But, it turns out a souvenir you bring back from your crash landing is valuable so you are sent back for more. This time you have a co-pilot to help you control the Pikmin you can jump back and forth between the two characters allowing you to control Pikmin in two places at once. This time life support isn't an issue and you know about the Pikmin and you get a new color Pikmin. I think this game is a lot more fun than P1 because it doesn't limit you to 30 game days but you do have to gather enough treasure to save your company before you can go home.

I would suggest getting Pikmin 2 with wii control it's only $20 if you like it try Pikmin 1. I'd do it in that order because P2 is less frustrating. Pikmin 3 is my next purchase then I'll have the trilogy I'm sure it's worth the money.

I stopped reading after puzzle strategy game. No thanks. lol

Yes I understand that Puzzle Starategy doesn't sound very good but the Pikmin franchise is one of the types of games you just don't understand why people like it until you try it. Everybody I know and most people online that have tried Pikmin or Pikmin 2 enjoy it.

It's a quirky game. I've never played it. But I always thought it looked quirky. I hear it's like a Real Time Strategy.
