Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has told gamers that the successor to the Wii will be mainstream but not to expect it any time soon.

Fils-Aime said the timing of the next console launch would depend on Shigeru Miyamoto. "When Mr. Miyamoto goes to Mr. Iwata and says. 'I have this great idea and I can't do it on the Wii,' that's when there will be a next generation console," Fils-Aime told Kotaku.. "What that includes we'll see.

"I think Mr. Miyamoto himself has said that he is very interested in a high-definition experience, but to be 120 percent crystal clear, HD by itself in our view is not enough to go for a new console past the Wii.

While not giving away any details, Fils-Aime said that the next console would follow the same business model that has served Nintendo so well with Wii and DS.

"It will be mainstream. It will be encouraging more and more consumers to get into this category that we love. It will provide new, unique, compelling experiences that are meaningful to that large potential consumer base. Those are the principles that drive us."

Seems like it's do when Miyamoto decides.

I'd say the Wii is already mainstream, unless non-HD implies non-mainstream.

I think he was implying it would be mainstream like the Wii is now. Good for Nintendo fans. I hope they make another Huge hit console. As long as they keep making fun games I will be buying it thats forsure.

well the HD part was a bit obvious.

the only interesting part is when he said HD was not enough... that means they are working on finding something beyond the current motion controls.

3D is ruled out as it'll be niche for years still.

I would say 3D is expected, just like HD, but yeah... it's ruled out as not a mainstream reason.

what the new wii neeeds, is high spec grafix so it can have cross platform games that get released on ps360, on top of that a proper controller for core games.

It's expected, I mean Wii is mainstream and a huge success, they should do the same with Wii2(if it will be called that).

The Wii already has a couple of proper controllers for core games to choose from.  I suppose it's possible the next would drop support for a proper controller for core games, but I doubt it the VC online store does too well...

A lot of people seem to want this kind of thing - my question is: why is this so important? You've already got 2 game systems that do this - why do some people want every console to be identical to one another, only in a different box and name stamped on it?

Unless you really badly want to have nintendo's console be your ONLY console - but don't want to be left out when it comes to HD games...

I for one don't need it. I personally am content with PS2 (sic!) level graphics. I don't mind if graphics are better of course, but it's not a must for me as long as the games are fun.

I'm hoping they'll squeeze a few years more out for this generation of gaming. I'm sure there's still a lot of potential for Wii (and PS3, my other current generation console).
