Forums - Sales - The difference between Sony and MS / Why is Sony limiting themselves?

God of War? One of the biggest IPs? Hardware seller?

The only big hardware sellers left are
DQX - Wii
GT5 - PS3

Zelda Wii might be, because it's a much bigger franchise than GoW, and hasn't seen a (main series non port) game released on the Wii yet
Kingdom Hearts 3 could be a big hardware mover in Japan if it releases on a home console

Its because Sony are a software company and Microsoft are a hardware company. You wouldn't expect Sony to be familiar with hardware logistics or anything like that.

Actually the likely cause is a screw up on Sony's end. They probably ordered the 45nm RSX and they short shipped the 65nm version, possibly due to some delay they had in the fab for getting volume of the 45nm up and running. They took a risk, hoping to lose less money by making fewer of the more expensive 65nm versions but they lost out.

This is the single most retarded post I've ever seen in my entire life on these forums.

Microsoft are a software company. Sony are a hardware company.

Infact, i'd be willing to bet sony is the largest hardware manufacturer in the world.

The 360 was and still is a technical disaster in terms of production.

It's also one of microsofts only successful hardware ventures, they are a software giant.

How you could possibly mistake that is hilarious.

They certainly did not order the wrong version of the RSX.

what a selfown. You need to delete your account now. Nobody will ever take you serious on VGC from this point on.

You made my day though :D

*edit* if a mod thinks this was too harsh, just delete this post please.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Sony's goal is to make a profit this year, not to win NPD numbers. They are shipping just enough to meet demand, i think they are preparing an another PS3 sku which would be profitable soon. They don't make money selling the 120gb everyone loves.

360k is huge for any month in the US for the PS3.

This is true, last fall was Sony's real userbase push and it worked out wonderfully (worldwide, not just US).  This is cyclical too, last year Microsoft had pretty much the same stance as Sony this year (profitability > numbers) which is why they just SKU reshuffled in leu of a real price drop.  I think this summer or fall is when you'll see Microsoft's "real" response to the slim...

I think the Slim is selling a hell of a lot better then Sony expect is what's going on, give them time they'll be back on track. It's not like they have to have big first weeks that big new games release, the people that want to buy the system are still going to buy it over time.

It's hard to say why Sony is failing to execute in delivering units to the market. Are they doing a redesign of the hardware? Is it a supplier shortage? Or did they simply under estimate the amount of units they needed to build? But I agree, it's an awful time to be short of product at a time when the software side of the business is starting to execute. Especially in the US market where you're trying to catch up.

Didn't you all hear? Some random gamestop employee told some random forum member all about how the new PS3 slims have a big YLOD/hardware failure problem! They are probably holding back their stock to weed out faulty ones!

That is not how it works, when there are shortages, it just makes people want it that much more, and it makes instead of having 1 or 2 great months, you have a year of good solid sales. Sony knows what they are doing.

Haha, that tired ol' argument.

Yes, telling people they can't have your product CAN sometimes make them want it more (see Gmail being invite only and facebook being uni student only at the begining) If you just don't ship enough, then those who weren't looking for a PS3 wont notice. Those who were will either buy a different console, not buy a console at all, or wait and buy a PS3.

IT IS NOT DELIBERATE!

One of those companies can plan for the future, innovate, create exciting and immersive games, and appeal to a wide audience.

The other is Sony.

I agree with what you said.

Shortages in 2007 = no big deal

Shortages right now = Huge mistake
