Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Molyneux: Fable III needs 5 million sales!

Lionhead looking to double success of Fable 2.

US, March 11, 2010 - During a panel at this year's Games Developer Conference, Peter Molyneux declared a lofty goal for Fable III. It needs to sell more than 5 million copies. Molyneux did not frame this as a financial goal, but instead a way to measure that far more people were drawn in by Fable III's big changes.

According to Molyneux, Fable III sold 3 million units on the original Xbox. The sequel sold more than 3.5 million copies on Xbox 360. By moving away from a traditional RPG system and adding emphasis to action and adventure elements, Molyneux hopes even more people will give Fable III a chance.

Molyneux says that few people who played Fable II utilized its various features. Despite being a major success, developer Lionhead isn't satisfied. Molyneux and co. want every player to experience and enjoy all that Fable III has to offer.

Fable III ships exclusively on Xbox 360 this fall.

Fable III sold that well on the Xbox?

Wow, that's a pretty ambitious goal, considering that Fable II only sold 3.5m WW.

So who thinks Fable 3 will reach that 5 million target? I'd say it's possible each game is increasing in sales.

I hope it does, but i see only about 3.5 million.

they need to balance the game to suit the hardcore as well as the more casual game. Its possible but very unlikely. I think 4mil max and there is a decent chance it won't even outsell the second one.

I don't know if it will quite get to 5 mill maybe a little over 4.

I'd love it if it could, but Fable 2 didn't create that many new fans for the series so I don't see 3 doing it either. I'll be looking for it to match Fable 2's numbers, then I'll consider it a success.

Well Fable 2 wasn't very impressive yet it was still a big success.

If Fable 3 is genuinely great, than should it hit 5 million after a a few years.

The more it moves away from more tradition RPG features the less likely I am to buy it! But I can definitely see it selling more then fable 2, but 5 mill will probably be a stretch.

Lets hope it actually has a proper final boss this time... Not having pay off at the end of the game ruined the 2nd game for me.
