Forums - Website Topics - Why Ad Blocking is devastating to the sites you love

I don't have any ad-block at home but at work I have flash-blocker and pop-up blocker on (I also have sound turned off there). And I will continue to keep them on there because pop-ups and flash have a lot of security issues. Then again, some PC's there don't even have flash so I couldn't see most videos in them anyway. Technically I don't have ad-block even there because every other ad are showing, just flash and pop-up ads are blocked (it doesn't matter what you think, flash and pop-up blockers are not ad-blockers). Those other ads don't bother me much though.

I dont use any kind of ad-blocking service, but i have been very temped for doing so.

Right now i m using a Netbook for surfing the Net(that´s why they were meant for), however, only VGChartz eclipses its Atom and gets really heavy on the browser (i have got 1GB of RAM, enough for Firefox i think).

I would like to advice to think on the Netbooks cause the main page itself is a little bit heavy (i think it is cause of Javascript, but not sure if Flash is involved too).

Anyways, i wont be blocking them anytime soon, but please hear our coments so we can enjoy a win-win situation.

Considering the ads on this site are not only annoying, but often block the content (posters text, articles, other images), frozen my internet browser on numerous occasions and I have personally gotten a Trojan from an ad on this site, should I really listen to this article?

Hmm...

Which ads are blocking content and freezing your internet? How come only a small handful of people seem to have these issues?!

Also back to the point I've made again and again - have you been actively alerting me when you've had these issues, especially the trojan?

We had a thread about it about 3-4 weeks ago where a bunch of people were getting redirected:

http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=99395

As for the trojan, that was a long time ago and my system got it.  And I couldn't track what ad gave it to me, I just know it came from the site because it crashed Firefox after visiting your site and when I ran antivirus, I had a trojan.

Frankly, for the last few months, the ads on the site have been getting progressivly more obnoxious and more controlling.  Crashing my browser at random times or popping up over my screen while I'm trying to type or read stuff on the forum.  I understand you may need it to run the site, but perhaps you might want to limit ads so they can't do that or put those kind of ads to certain pages.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I can never assure you 100% that every single ad we show will be totally free of adware or viruses

In that case I can assure you that my adblocker will be turned on 100% of the time.

Dont get me wrong, im looking at you thekitchensink, i dont mind if you shut out your users to turn a profit. Profit is the only thing that matters. As i said a few post back, if you feel that shutting down X amount of users in order to turn a profit, than fine by me, go ahead.

The issue here is that under no circumstances do you go out and tell your "share holders" that its their fault that your company is in the red. And that they're theifs for using the companys water cooler.

Um... if shareholders started stealing from my company, which I've already proven is equivalent to this situation in the post that you decided not to try to rebut, then damn straight I'd tell them that it's their fault.

Good day to you, sir.

If a company provides you with water coolers for the sake of making your workers happy and the working enviorment a good one, and 4 years later the CEO of that company gathers all his workers at the family picnic and goes - "if you dont start paying for the water i'll fire you!" - you dont see a problem in that approach? Wouldn't been better to just throw out the water coolers an buy vending machines?

In the first situation 10 times out of 10 your workers are going to start talking trash about the company, drink water anyway, search for a new job etc. In the second situation 10 times out of 10 your workers would go "ooh sweet... snacks!"

Your analogy is flawed in the sense that ioi has never said that we should pay directly to see the website, but you said that the CEO will charge for the water. It's different. It would be better to say that the CEO will just put adverts on the water cooler.

Just as extreme as your comment.

here's one of my forum topics from over 2 years ago, just to prove I was having serious problems with this site.

Another one from someone else.

I don't block ads, so I didn't even notice anything happening, but I also run Linux so I'm not vulnerable to your site when your advertisers decide to spread malware. Maybe when people see you've got your act in line they'll be more inclined to trust the site's ads. Don't blame it on us when past experience tells us it's not worth the risk.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

I do not use an Ad blocker but experience tells me that malicious code is often injected via the ads so I can certainly understand those not wishing to spend an evening unravelling a Fake AV attack.
