I don't understand why well over 2 million in sales isn't considered 'massive'. That would be enough to place a game in the top 30 of 360 software, or the top 20 of both Wii and PS3 software. Some people on here really seem to be blinded by the numbers- there's a mindset that unless a game sells 5 million +, it's almost considered a failure.

Also, given around 5 million sales of the main games, and 3 million sales of the various add-ons, the franchise will have generated well over $250 million in revenue. Again, how is this not 'massive'?

I only compared it to other key exclusives or popular multiplat games on other platforms.

I'm of course not talking about quality here. Just about popularity.

And yes BF2 is on steam now (for about 6 months). But I hope you don't expect something like 500k more sales in those 6 months....

It's not a failure at all. But given the userbase of PC gamers, the popularity of first person shooters and lots of exclusive releases it's just one of many game franchises.

EA has been selling BF games direct for a long time, most of the expansions were bought that way. Original game was mostly physical copies, but the SF xpack was at least half digital, forget where I saw that was a long time ago. Was just more convenient for most people to use EA DLer for xpansion, those who had CC anyhow.

Pretty sure the 2.5m figure is just the recorded amount for first 2-4 weeks, I dont know what it ended up at, but it should be reasonably higher. So its 2.5 + whatever it sold in 5 years. 2.5 might be sell-in not sell-thru, which would put actualy sell thru probably closer to 2.2-2.3m

Did it have a retail re-release as a bundle? I dont recall, that would have driven sales some.

This goes against initial reports that the PC version had the most players. On its official forum, DICE said "During peak US hours the Xbox 360 dominates the player numbers. When that post claiming PC numbers were greater was made it was the Europeans playing and pushed the PC numbers higher".

So, once again it appears that the Xbox 360 is the place to be for shooter fans. War never changes.

Call of Duty was a PC franchise aswell with a strong cometitive scene aswell, and look how that turned out. From what ive played of BFBC2 i can tell its a Console game aswell, so i guess the initial high PC numbers was just a peak of players wanting to check it out due to MW2 being a kick in the balls.

And JaggedSac's post seem to verify my hypothethis to a certain degree.

Yea I figured as much.  I wish there was a way you could track how many people were playing each gametype like in Halo 3 or CoD.  I think that's a really cool feature and should be in most games.

not shocking, this is why the majority of good PC part manufacturers are Europe only companies, you can't get their parts here. The PC will eventually outsell the consoles though, hype dies quickly on consoles, while good shooters sell for a long long time on PC.
