Forums - Nintendo - Wii is a virus developer explains his comments

Wii is a Virus!

In a recent Interview  that spawned a few other posts, here, here and here. I stated that the Wii is like a virus.  I would like to hereby take a moment to clarify what I meant.

First off I believe the Wii is a phenomenal accomplishment and a great addition to the Video game space.  Nintendo did a very smart thing by staying away from the graphics arms race and created a product that was different and could stand out.

Given this design direction the Wii in my mind is more of a toy then a Games machine, and i say millions of Wii Fit players agree with me!.  It’s a Toy that plays some pretty good video games, but the majority of users that has bought a Wii I believe would never consider buying a X360 or a PS3.  Simply because I believe they would not be interested in that experience, the Wii initial experience is so new and refreshing, they come over and play it with someone or see it in the store and it becomes almost an impulse buy.

They then play if a few times and BECAUSE they are not gamers, they put it away. It might come out from time to time at a party etc, where some new people get to experience the “fun” and now they go buy one, and the circle repeats itself, thus it spreads like a “virus”.  How many people do you think has come over to a party and played a PS3 or X360 game and then gone a bough a console (Rock band and guitar hero games excluded!), right!.

So i really meant no disrespect to Nintendo at all or the Wii, just expressed the opinion that i think the Wii will need a successor sooner rather then later, as its Newness and Virus spreading capabilities will soon run out.   Just my 2 cents!

Now the world is weird  and people take Prozac  to make it normal.

I wished people would play more games on the systems instead of talking about pros and cons all the time. Each gaming system has at least a few fantastic games, some great games and many good games. Each gaming system has at least a few games for every taste. That's all that matters to me.

And the term "virus" has a negative meaning, no matter how you try to spin it.

EDIT: "Viral" being similar, but not the same.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

He just made things worse.

Consoles were always meant to be toys. The best consoles were toys and there have been no truly great console that has tried to be more than a toy. (There I said it)

And being a DVD player is not being above a toy.

lol posts like this are incredibly funny for a number of reasons.

Firstly, the Wii is a games console like all other games consoles except for 1 thing. It has a different control method.
Secondly, all games consoles are toys, the fact that more and more adults are now playing with them, doesnt take away that fact.
Thirdly, Nintendo have simply tapped into a new market with their console. Hard core Nintendo fans have still purchased the Wii and love the games that it has on it.
Forthly, Microsoft and Sony are now trying to tap into this new market (are their consoles going to become viruses aswell?)
Finally, all these comments about the Wii stem from the fact that hardcore gamers fear they might miss out on future expensive new and existing IPs because devleopers want to make a quick buck. Well from what i have seen most developers have realised that the new market that has opened up are very very selective about what they buy and rarely like to spend money on the Wii, not because they think its rubbish but because they are not hardcore gamers and therefore prefer to spend their money on other things.

I think its about time simple logic was used when dealing with people that create these sorts of posts.

Oh I donno....why don't you try looking at the amount of XBOX360 and PS3s sold vs the amount of Wiis sold....

Just for a bit of 'spin', the Wii version of Guitar Hero 3, Rock Band 2 and The Beatles: Rock Band sold better than all their HD counterparts except for Rock Band 2 on the XBOX360. Hmmm...no wonder he made that 'one exception'.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I like how he stated in the original interview, "it's a toy, people have got to realize the Wii is a toy, not an entertainment focused product". This means that toys are not entertaining?

The Wii may not be a traditional games machine but it is every bit an entertainment focused product. It has sold to many people who would've never considered buying a console before. This is something Nintendo intended. If the Wii gets more people interested in gaming, maybe some day they will go out and buy a PS3 or 360 too. This effect broadens the market we all love, and that's only a good thing.
