If your so ridiculously sure about that lets make a bet on it.

Has there been a franchise even close to this level on Playstation or Xbox that HASN'T had a full sequel sell better than its predecessor?   I can only think of a couple examples, and it's more when they sequalized to death ala Tony Hawk or Guitar hero or something.

There's no indication anywhere that this wouldn't sell at least as well.

You said sequel 2 times...that's where you're wrong. This isn't a sequal, it's a prequel. Please go find me history were a prequel outsold the game it came after. Resident evil zero? MSG3? I'm pretty sure they didn't.

I think you're underestimating what master chief is to the halo franchise. Look at ODST. I expect reach to do much better then ODST, but not Halo 3 league.

ODST wasn't a true sequel, as has been discussed a billion times.  It was more an experiment and fans service.

And Reach is a sequel to the game, not the story.

I love the Halo fiction - all the books, the Halopedia, the anime.  But virtually no one's buying the games for the story.  Halo is all about gameplay, and they build what story there is around it.  It doesn't matter when it's set or whether MC and Cortana is in it.  You're underestimating the relevance of the actual game here.

If people bought games simply for the story, the best seller list would be very very different.  Gameplay, gameplay, gameplay.  I really loved the Super MArio Kart story.  It was enthralling.  And WiiFit.  The only games in the top 50 worldwide this week for example, that sell because of story in any argument are probably Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain?  Maybe an RPG?  Certainly not shooters.

And by far the most popular element of a Halo game is multi-player, in which Master Chief has no part.  The only reason ODST sold less is that everyone already owned the multiplayer.

We'll see who's right in September.  *shrug*  But I don't buy your argument in the least.    It just doesn't make sense when you actually look at the way games sell.

No, it's a prequel, not a sequel. Halo 4 with MC would be a sequel.

I buy video games for the story, FPS included. 10million people did NOT buy Halo 3 for just gameplay, and 10million people did not buy it for the multiplayer. I probably have logged no more then 3 hours of halo 3 mp yet played the game through 3 times. I get it, mp it's amazing, but I didn't buy it for the gameplay of mp. I bought it because it has an engaging story that had me since halo 1.

I read the halo books too, even the fall of reach books focused around MC. It bearly even says anything of what happened on reach. I read it because MC was an awesome character who is shrouded with mystery. I don't really care for the reach game tbh. And there are others like me. Give me the next MC halo and i'm there.

Sorry but there is no chance in HELL that a prequel which doesn't contain the main character of the previous 3 blockbuster games is going to outsell the game that put the end to the trilogy. People have no reason to run into halo reach like they did from halo 2 into halo 3. The halo story is over with halo 3.

On that note, if you don't agree and really think halo reach will outsell halo 3, then we will agree to disagree and see in september.

HALO REACH is not HALO 4 people..

honestly, thats like saying ODST will outsell HALO 3 (I understand REACH is a bigger than ODST, but it will likely have a similar impact, since its not a direct sequel, but more of a prequel)

I don't do bets. Take my word for it. I'll be here come September, I'll look at this thread after the first weeks sales of halo reach. We will have our answer then. And one of use will be laughing.

Halo 3 had people that don't even care for FPS buying it just to see what all the talk was about. They won't be doing it again. You can quote me on that.

I don't think so, but I do hope so.

Stop moaning about the game, if you don't like the game shut up and make our own game.

The definition of "prequel' is literally, in Latin a sequel that occurs beforehand.

Reach is a sequel in the Bungie Halo series, while a prequel in story. leo and ymeage1n are being way too restrictive here.

A true prequel to Halo would mean exclusion of all the advancements of the games and weapons and engines and technology that has gone into the game in the last decade. You're arguing just to argue again.

And yes, ymeaga1n, there are a small percentage of Halo 3 buyers who play campaign only - even if you said 20 percent, that would be 2 million buyers.

But there are 30 million more people in the install base. You really think that that in that 30 million new buyers there aren't people to replace those two million who just bought into the hype? you don't think the hype around this game this time around won't persuade buyers? The literally millions who rented/bought used/played as guests/played at friends in H3 because they missed the launch or didn't yet have a box aren't going to buy the next round? Bogus.

I bought Gears of War on launch. Didn't buy Gears 2. It still sold more. How come? I didn't buy it! How is that possible?

I still have yet to hear an argument that says Reach will fail to live up to H3 sales standards.

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

Reach is the definitive Halo from the creators of Halo with a bigger team working on it than ever. It will be massive. The beta will prove that.

I really love Halo, but Reach I just don't think will sale as well as Halo3, There are so many great shooters now, When Halo1 2 came out there were no other great shooters on consoles, Then Halo 3 sold well because of the hype from Halo 1 and 2 plus first Halo on 360, there new console, ODST sold well, around 4.5 million I believe. I think Reach will sale a little better, I think were looking out about 3-4 million opening month, and maybe 6-7 million lifetime. I could be wrong, all I know is most of the big Halo fans I know have moved on to other great shooters they like better now, plus they have said this halo will be more like Killzone2, so it may turn a lot of halo fans off, but may also get a few more fans coming in, so we will see but I say 6-7 million for atleast 3 years maybe lifetime.

Halo 3 was the most played game on Live last year.

And the bolded is completely wrong.  It will be the Halo experience through and through, with the exceptional Bungie balance and polish.

If you doubt Bungie's dedication to balance, polish, and community dedication, here is a GDC Session that a Bungie employee will be doing:

Speaker/s: Jaime Griesemer (Bungie Studios)
Day / Time / Location: Thursday 1:30- 2:30 Room 130, North Hall
Track / Format: Game Design / Lecture
Description: Halo's multiplayer is balanced across over 1000 objects, more than 40 of which are unique weapons including the Sniper Rifle, which has over 200 functional fields including one that determines the minimum time between shots. In Halo 3, that time changed from 0.5 seconds to 0.7 seconds, changing less than 0.00001th of the overall game data, an immeasurably tiny balance tweak that should not have been noticeable, let alone significant.

This session will address this design decision in exhaustive detail. Why 0.7 seconds? Why that particular field? What processes and design principles lead to that change? How was it proposed, tested, and evaluated? What were its effects on the game's balance? How were those effects evaluated to the effects of the infinite number of other changes that could have been made? What were the external considerations, such as community reaction or target demographics, that influenced it? And what can be learned from that change to improve our ability to make changes in the future?

I doubt it. This time, they have a real competitor that will divert sales: Call of Duty 7.

You mean like Call of Duty 4 with Halo 3? And people expects CoD 7 to be more like WaW than CoD4 (CoD 4 outsold WaW) so less are likely to buy it. And MW2 has easily surpassed CoD 4 in sales so logically Halo Reach will probably do the same with Halo 3
