Biggest innovation in gaming this generation?

Online Multiplayer 27 15.08%

Motion Controls 96 53.63%

Achievements 24 13.41%

Technological Leap 22 12.29%

DLC 3 1.68%

Other 7 3.91%

Total:179

First off, I'd like to say 3/4 that list are things that were invented previously (like, 2 generations ago on the Dreamcast or earlier). Things like 'Online gaming' and 'DLC' were just made more popular this gen.

Second of all, I'd actually venture to say the biggest 'innovation' in gaming this gen is not even linked to any gameplay mechanic. Its actually the inclusion of entire new markets to gaming. What many have deemed the 'casual' and 'mini-game' markets. But whatever you want to call it, Nintendo has opened up a whole new world of people to gaming.  Which Microsoft, Sony and a group of other third parties are trying to now jump on. That's the real 'innovation' this generation. And its going to spill into next gen and beyond.

Six upcoming games you should look into:

I think Heavy Rain is the biggest innovation, new style game-play and story based gaming/adventure gaming on a console platform is the best

Heavy rain is not innovative at all.

It borrows heavily from games like Shenmue and the old PC interactive movies (FMVs)

It's just an  CG movie at best with interactive sequences which has been done before.

Funniest lines I've read in a while. Someone hasn't played it.

Sounds like someone else hasn't played Indigo Prophecy. :P

Sounds like someone doesn't know what they're talking about. Have you even played HEAVY RAIN OR looked through my game collection?

So educate us all, what exactly sets Heavy Rain apart from Indigo Prophecy?  Well, besides worse controls, forced minigames and SONY.

I voted motion controls, but I honestly sort of want to take it back and vote for achievements instead.

Currently playing: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, NBA2k11, Metal Gear Solid, Picross 3d

So in your opinion what is the single biggest innovation to console gaming this generation?

  • Online Multiplayer - With Xbox Live came a brilliant ableit juvenile community.  Every game was instantly connected to thousands of people and competitive multiplayer and co-op experiences became the norm making gaming a social experience.
  • Motion Controls - The Wii isn't a graphical powerhouse but it did bring something that opened the doors for 10's of millions new gamers -- motion controls.  Everyone from my six year old nephew to my 80 year old nana bought a Wii because of the new control optioned that immersed them even further into the games.
  • Achievements - With Xbox Live came multiplayer and achievements.  Multiplayer let you play with friends from your couch and achievements gave you a reason to play and keep playing.  By dangling a prize in front of the player with a description that's even short for twitter, gamers did things they normal wouldn't do and played more than they normally would have played.
  • Technological Leap - It's no secret that the Xbox was a giant in the looks department.  Look at a Gamecube, PS2, or Xbox game and compare it to a launch Xbox 360 game and the difference is insane.  Now, with the PS3 out and several years into both consoles, looking at a recent PS3 or Xbox 360 and comparing that to a launch Xbox 360 game and the difference is night and day.  Games have made a huge leaps and bounds in the overall size and look in three short years that is just incredible impressive.
  • Downloadable Content - Ah, horse armor, so expensive and so worthless.  Sure, we laugh but no with DLC we can expand our games by having regular content delivered to us for a price.  Sometimes, like in the case of horse armor, it's a joke, other times, like in the case of Borderlands, it's almost an entire new game!
  • Other - Did I miss something?  Reply and let everyone knoe!
  • User-created content - Specially when it's the core of a game like Little Big Planet (or any other I don't recall now)
  • Seamless gameplay-cinematic transition - enabling more dramatic games and hollywood-like experiences. This could be part of the tecnological leap, but in all honest, it's been tried before but never done the way a game like Uncharted 2, MGS4, FFXIII or God of War III do it.

I don't see why that is even necessary, but ok.

Anyway, to your question: look through the official thread. I have educated those who actually care about the game enough. The very way you walk in HEAVY RAIN sets it apart from Indigo.

Plus, Heavy Rain doesn't suck.  That's a huge difference between it and Indigo Prophecy.  Not to mention the whole "four person perspective/ you can die and the game continues/Motion controls/Branching storyline/nudity" thing.

I had all of those stuff on the PC except motion controls. So I voted motion controls.

But what I would like to vote for is the business strategies that were introduced with the DS. their impact on this gen is absolutely massive. Bigger than any of the things on the list.

I LOVE ICELAND!

OT: I'd go with either online gaming or motion control.

It's a david cage game(should be enough said right there)  and your were a fanboy who already decided to love it before you played it to be objective.

Nothing about HR is innovative.

It's been done before. If HR was released in 1999 like Shenmue most likely would have been another niche game that didn't take off.

Like Omikron didn't either.

This gen just laps these up and people with short gaming memories or wasn't around then or just total fanboys think HR is new and innovative.

Branching four character storyline?  That's the genre shearing "innovation"?

Indigo Prophecy had sex scenes btw.  Or at least it did when it was called Fahrenheit.

The question was what set it apart from Indigo Prophecy, was it not?  You control a reporter.  There.  Question answered......again.
