Forums - Sony Discussion - Heavy Rain prediction fail

Lets not forget the superb ad campaign. Great adverts and music placed during programs that adults watch.

I was expecting to see nothing of this game, well done Sony.

I don't get it.. people always say games like KZ2, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2 and GOW3 are only based on graphics.. but the way I look at it it just has great graphics and even better gameplay, I don't get how they can call a game that just looks good "only about graphics" (not counting KZ2 for that instance)

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

Maybe because Heavy Rain is actually GOOD?

To answer your question, Lair had many things wrong with it that were detrimental to it's success, including reviews that spit on it. HEAVY RAIN also wasn't 'hyped to death', not really even on the internet. It received a modest amount of hype, with reviews that were extremely positive. It's a sleeper hit now.

What it tells me is each fan-base goes for something specific to their liking. Maybe Wii fans didn't want an FPS, especially one from a non-proven franchise. Perhaps PlayStation fans wanted something fresh and innovative (very similar to Nintendo fans) and along comes critically acclaimed, HEAVY RAIN.

Even now, Sony has to answer to HEAVY RAIN shortages (something that would have been laughed at just 2 weeks ago). The game became successful because of the story, the visuals, the way it's played (yes, that made a difference to many) and the fact that it was so well received by the critics.

Today is a good day or the future of gaming of this nature. I mainly celebrate HEAVY RAIN's sales for that purpose, all else is moot. The game could have sold just one copy (my own) and it still would be where it is today on my gaming chart: #1.

Exactly! Only here on VGChartz this one guy, whats his name? kept hyping it

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

- George Orwell, ‘1984’

Off topic: People who like Heavy Rain should try Shadow of Destiny on the PS2. It's the last game (besides Indigo Prophecy) that I played that felt like this. It's almost 10 years old, though.

The game has a great premise. It's a lack of vision that caused people to doubt it.
That, and the fact that the trolls out there calling it a QTE-festival were able to convince the weak minded that it isn't fun.

Next time, remember that words =/= reality.

What a change of tune. I remember the days when you said: 'Luckily, only CGI is hyped for HEAVY RAIN'. Oh yeah, called out, I don't forget!

We went from a creepy Uncanny Valley-esque crying girl with a gun to a fantastic interactive experience with a brilliant story.

I have a feeling it's selling to the crowd who bought Silent Hill 2 back in the day. There hasn't been anything that has matched up to that game in a long time, and this looks like the same sort of thing, without the horror stuff. It comes up in comparisons often, also.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Your first mistake was under-estimating it by that much

second.... to compare it to LAIR, why would you even do that?

anyway I predicted 300K week 1, its blown past that expectation

ITs sold out in my town right now

THis will mean the game has legs too!

All hail the KING, Andrespetmonkey

I also wanted to point out that the typical ps owner, both now and historically, is a fan of a good story.
