Forums - General Discussion - Guess who won the straw poll for 2012 Presidential Election Candidate..

Also, if your interested in Ron's view in a nutshell:

- Non-interventionist, pull out of Iraq & Afghanistan immediately (got major flak at the 08 debates for that)
- End trade restrictions with Cuba
- Smaller government
- Lower taxes
- End the federal reserve (wrote the bill providing the first independent audit of the fed)
- Pro gay marriage (in the way of ending the fed controlling the definition of marriage and licenses)
- Pro drugs
- Anti death penalty for federal crimes
- End the department of education

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

I pretty sure the US will have a female president before it will have another white Caucasian president in his 70's. Anyway Ron Paul is just too old to be electable sure he is popular we all love/loved our grandparents but we don't want them to run our countries.

As a foreigner who expressed little interest in the Republican party's shenanigans during the last election, I am ignorant of Ron Paul's policies.

If it isn't too much trouble, I'm hoping (ney, I'm sure) someone will step in and quell me of my ignorance.

Greatly reduce the federal government and regulate stuff back to the state, no military involvement overseas, flat tax... http://www.ontheissues.org/Ron_Paul.htm can give you all the info you want.

On looking at that link...he actually wouldn't be that bad.

Other than the fact that he wants to abolish Social Security (seriously?) and teach "scientific evidence for creationism" in schools.

"scientific evidence for creationism"

Not wanting to derail the thread, but what evidence would that be?

Precisely why I put it in quotation marks. I have no idea.

- Non-interventionist, pull out of Iraq & Afghanistan immediately (got major flak at the 08 debates for that) - DISLIKE
- End trade restrictions with Cuba -  LIKE
- Smaller government - LIKE
- Lower taxes - LIKE
- End the federal reserve (wrote the bill providing the first independent audit of the fed) - ?
- Pro gay marriage (in the way of ending the fed controlling the definition of marriage and licenses) - LIKE
- Pro drugs - LIKE
- Anti death penalty for federal crimes - LIKE
- End the department of education - ?

The question marks indicate non-immediate liking/disliking all depending on what he's going to put in place of the incumbent.

Ron Paul always made a lot of sense to me except for a few major things (flat taxes, ending the department of education, mixing religion and education). Unfortunately, a lot of his views makes him un-electible (is that a word?) as a Republican.

Edit: And he's too old to drive a car responsibly......

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Eliminating Social Security would just be the recognition that it is a system that is bankrupt. While there was some forethought about the eventual cost of the system, and it was designed to run a surplus which was meant to be saved for future spending, it has steadily been robed by politicians to pay for their promises; and now it is going to run very large (and growing) deficits for the rest of its existence.

On the subject of creationism, I personally don’t have a problem with schools teaching about creationism as long as it is presented in a religious/cultural context and not in a scientific context. Basically, if in a History/Social-Studies course you want to have a unit on the creation myths of several cultures I am happy with it, but I think it would be moronic to present it as a viable alternative to evolution.

I am pleasantly surprised by this.

I basically agree with you on this, though for those you marked with question marks, I have various reasons why I'm both in favor and against the ideas.
