Forums - Nintendo Discussion - PS2 will remain the best selling console of all time by the end of this gen

Wrong. That's in the title. The claim in the actual OP is that the Wii will stop selling and thus will not outsell the PS2 at all.

That's exactly my point isn't it!

WE know the Wii is gonna continue to sell beyond this gen (the OP creator is dellusional of course)... but at the end of this gen, it may still be behind (for which his/her prediction may still hold true).

I agree with that, unless the PS2 really finally slows to a crawl and sells just a few million more, and the Wii sells 70-80 million.

There is absolutely no way with the pace that the Wii is currently selling at, that it just sells another 20 million in the next 2 years and suddenly flatlines after that. 90 million total sales is an EXTREMELY conservative estimate for total Wii sales at this point, and saying the PS2 will make it to 160 million LTD is extremely optimistic for the console.

PS2 has been a massive success, but currently sits at barely 140 million and has recently drops off fast. It would be lucky to make it past 145 million at this point.

Wii should easily make it to 140 million, considering it's outpacing the PS2's sales at this point in the PS2's lifetime, and Nintendo still has another potential massive hit on their hands in the vitality sensor, that could give another lift for the console. I think by 2014 the Wii should have passed the PS2. This is provided Nintendo doesn't foolishly cut off the lifespan of their own console while it's still selling strongly. My prediction for lifetime sales for the Wii is in the ballpark of 140 million worst case scenario, and 180 million best case.

how is it a fair comparison to give the PS2 12 years and give the wii only 6?  If you want to ask which will sell more in its respective generation then it is even more likely to be the wii.

Generations last six years, so the PS2 stopped selling in 2006, right? Completely taken off the market?

That's not what I'm saying. You're missing the point. The gamecube came out in 2001 and was discontinued in 2006. The xbox came out in 2001, discontinued in 2006. The PS2 kep going because of its strong weekly sales and Sony wanted to see the console have a 10 year lifespan. Now that  it will reach its 10th year in japan  by march and in us by october, Sony should discontinue the console in early 2011. That's what i'm trying to say.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/library/historical_data/pdf/consolidated_sales_e0912.pdf

I'm not gonna bother looking up the Xbox stuff, but since I found this nice chart when looking up info for the Gameboy I'll inform you that the Gamecube continued to be shipped until FY 2008, and software continued to be shipped until FY 2009. If they continued to support a failure in the sense that it only sold ~20M, what in the world makes you think they'll drop a cash cow like the Wii that's more than tripled those sales in half of the time?

Companies don't discontinue a product because they don't want to drag it into the next generation, or it's been out long enough, or any other silly reason. They drop something if it's no longer making a profit(or for loss-leading consoles if the red ink will never turn black) or if the opportunity cost is too much, meaning they could profit more on something else.

@Miquel_Zorro  as to the definition of console, from Merriam-Webster's:

5 : an electronic system that connects to a display (as a television set) and is used primarily to play video games

Just because portables are internally connected to their display means they don't count?

the title say console.

"the title say console."

HOME console is what the DS is not. The title does not have that word, so it counts. You ever heard the term "handheld console"?

The market leader always lasts well into the next generation of gaming. NES, SNES, PS1, and PS2 all sold for much longer than 5 years. They were still building and selling brand new Famicoms in Japan for 20 years. Wii will not disappear overnight. When you build up that much momentum, it takes a looooooong time to slow down.

Yes, it is unfair comparing the PS2's two generation of sales with the Wii's single gen. What should have been compared is the PS2's lifespan against the Wii's lifespan. Even though the sales of the Wii is beastly, we can't expect it to overtake the the accumulated PS2's 12 year sales, given only half that time. Again the OP is flawed, but that is how the comparison and prediction is done.

The wii continues to sell 20 million units a year which means it should be putting out another 50-60 million in the next 3. Pretty darn close to the ps2. Infact I think its gonna beat it...

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.
