Makes you wonder if Sony is phasing out the 120GB.

Since their sales haven't been boosted as has been shown both here and NPD/Chart Track etc.

I mean, why else would you overproduce your top end model and under produce your lower model.

Maybe they plan to drop the 250 to 120 Price? Or release a new 120? Or it has something to do with the "3D" firmware and they don't want to send out more without 3D.

Red - Sales haven't been boosted...? Are we both looking at the same sales?

Yes?  It's numbers are still right by the 360's.   Their is nothing in the last few months that should of been causing massive shortages. I mean they're about on target with their shipment numbers afterall... which they predicted.

To have shortages you'd of expected their shipped number to be way higher last financial report.

For the year so far the PS3 is up 43% on last year. How isn't that classed as a boost?

Also, the PS3 has by far its largest holiday season this gen so far. I again ask, how hasn't it been boosted?

As for the shortages, maybe they are phasing out the 120. Maybe they will be making the 250 standard for $299, and introducing a 500GB.

The second part of your post would be "making my point for me." While the first part of your post was ignoring the post you were replyng to.

No. You said PS3 didn't get any boost as i have highlighted in red, yet it is up 43% on last year despite having supply issues in certain places.

The fact is, PS3 has had a major boost. The first part of the post was replying to the blue.

Did you read anything after yes? If you did that would explain the actual context of what i was talking about.

I did, and i don't think it matters that it is close to 360 if it is up 43% YoY. What you said is wrong, and there has been a significant boost.

Or to put it even more simply... to cause a shortage you generally need one of 3 things

1) A boost in demand over what you expect to sell. This isn't happening as i've been saying all thread due to the different sales tracking numbers.

2) Phasing out product... what i suggested was happening... in my first post.

3) A shipping error. we would of heard of this.

What relevence would a YOY boost have on shortages? What i said wasn't wrong. You just misinterpreted what i said for some reason.

Are you talking about a recent boost, or an overall boost since the slim? ¬_¬

If it's the former, i apologize.

It is indeed the former. There was no drastic boost that should of caused sony to run out of product. Which means they had to have made a much larger about of 250's then 120's which doesn't really make much sense unless they are phasing something out... or for some reason were just really daft on what would sell.

In that case i'm sorry.

But if these shortages spread elsewhere, my guess would be phasing out the 120, and making the 250 standard.

Like I said, that's my guess too... i remember other people saying they couldn't find 120's anywhere... though that was sparse and local. Makes me think Sony's got something up their sleeves. I can't imagine they thought their premium model would outsell their regular one.

I go with #3

Shipping error, simple, they f#cked up big time, and didn't produce as much as they should have.. or they are holding production since they are going to break even fairly soon.

PS3 is sold out EVERYWHERE here, and people are going for the alternative, and that's the 360 which is instock everywhere, so sony isn't doing well in the shipping department atleast in miami.

I wouldn't call it bad forecasting, most people here with reasonable sense aren't blown away by the sales at present. Maybe they are phasing out the 120GB and increasing the price back to $349?
