White jury bias against white defendants

White jurors in diverse communities are more likely to convict white defendants who attack ethnic minority victims than other white victims because they are "more conscious of race", Professor Cheryl Thomas' report found.

The study, Are Juries Fair, found overall that juries were indeed fair and free from racial prejudice and concluded that cases involving black and other ethnic minority defendants do not face "persistent disproportionality" in court. Mock trials were staged in which real juries deliberated on the same cases but with defendants and victims of different races.

However, cases held in Nottingham, an area chosen because it was racially mixed, revealed an apparent bias against white defendants by white juries.

In those cases white defendants were significantly more likely to be convicted of assault if the victim was from an ethnic minority group than if they were white.

It said: "This suggests that white jurors living in diverse communities may be more conscious of race and more censorious towards white defendants in cases involving interracial conflict compared to white jurors living in predominantly white communities.

I find this discovery to be very upsetting considering the supposed eqality within Britain.

I wasn't aware there was racial discrimination within the justice system , what do you think of this?

Just for those who are unaware, the telegraph is a relativly popular and well known paper within England.

why did you leave out the Questionmark and replaced it with !!!!!..? the original article had a questionmark... cause without knowing the cases in Nothingham it's riduclious to make any conclusion... Maybe there was a group of 10 neo-nazi's arrested and trialed thus making the numbers of white defendants convicted by a white jury higher.. who knows... stay calm..

I think we go a long way to ensure racial equality in the UK justice system, the case with Nottingham appears to be one isolated point where keeping a fair level of racial equality does appear to be problematic.

Hopefully there are no major problems, and if there are major problems I would assume that the courts are working very hard to correct them.

The Telegraph just picked up on this because, well, it's a newspaper; and like all newspapers it likes controversy if it sells a few thousand copies more.

Nottingham is probably still trying to shake the "evil sherrif" stereotype and overcompensating.

Firstly, it was an isolated case.

Secondly, attacking somebody of an ethnic minority would also violate the Race Relations Act, so that's a double crime, if you think about it.

Isolated or not,

If the roles were reversed im sure it would be all over the news and not just a short part of the paper. And anyway, white defendants were "significantly" more likely to be convicted. How can they make a mistake like that?

This is further proof that white people can and do experience racism. It's what happens when political correctness goes overboard.
