Forums - Sales Discussion - Sony is killing the PS2, not retailers

The second PS3 turns profitable, PS2 will be killed and PS2 BC will be added.. that will give Sony alot of initial sales making a big turnaround.

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

Gamestop is a atypical as they rely on used games sales. PS2 sells more used games than new, so the demand for PS2 would be abnormally high.

New PS2 games are down 60% in revenue year over year. That drop will worsen as PS2 development is pretty much gone now.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

I just can't comprehend why people still buy PS2's. I mean its over 9 years old. Sure it has an amazing library of games but its so outdated. And with the Wii and 360 only being $200 and the PS3 just $300 price can't be why people buy PS2's over current gen consoles.

Because people not rich.  Everyone can't buy the newer consoles and spend $60 for every game.  Some people save they money for more important things like bills and food.  The PS2 has a huge library of great games so why not buy one.  There are still hundreds of PS2 games I want to play.

It's simple why the PS2 is still in demand. The Wii is $200 now but for PS2 gamers that want to play 'core' games, my guess is they'd rather own a PS3 or 360. But a PS3 or 360 isn't cheap. Most people bought the PS2 when it was like $200 and it didn't take long for the PS2 to hit $200. It first hit $200 in 2002 I believe. Adjust that for inflation and $200 in 2002 is still equivalent to like $240 today, $60 cheaper than the PS3 slim and 360 Elite price point. Not to mention that the games are $10 more expensive. So even though the PS3 and 360 have been around for awhile, they are still pretty expensive. The 360 Arcade sku doesn't count because it's pretty bones. Without a hard drive, it's only good for offline gaming and if the internal memory gets filled to capacity, you're gonna have to buy a hard drive anyway. Add in the fact that HDTV penetration was only like 46% in the US as of Nov 2009 and there comes another cost of HD consoles: A HDTV. Factor in the recession to all this and well, the PS2 is just not going to die off just yet.

Oh and heres anothing big thing that gets overlooked: PS2 piracy (yes I pointed out the big elephant in the room!) is cake and risk-free. You can softmod it without opening it up or voiding the warranty. PS3 piracy is non-existant and 360 piracy is well, just ask the million live users that got their console banned. lol. And even if the Jasper was reliable and even if I didn't care about Live at all, I wouldn't risk throwing away a 3 year RRoD and e74 warranty. I'm sure many other gamers feel the same.

Going by software sales, it seems like most of the 'core' crowd already migrated to the 360/PS3 but then there's used game sales and piracy to consider. And hell, Madden NFL 10 sold over 800k on the PS2. So it's obvious there's still a significant 'core' audience left on the PS2.

maybe sony did not meet the supply demand

I noticed that someone bought 7 PS2's last November from Best Buy which was their whole inventory. I just went back to Best Buy today and they still don't have any in stock, pretty weird.

Battlefield Bad Company 2 > Modern Warfare 2

I checked Best Buy online and it states that it's not available for shipping and it's not available in the local stores.

I find it fascinating that you have over 20,000 posts and over twice as many VG $ lost.

On topic- It does seem strange. Maybe they will be coming out with a backward compatible PS3 soon. Then again, it's probably a matter of Sony not making sense again.

10 year console still in demand...hats off to that. I don't think Sony would make a move like that. If the demand goes down, then only we can expect PS2 to die out completely. The shortages might be intended for some other purpose. Well for the demand and supply chain right now PS3 needs to survive it to keep the sales pace steady or again expect lower sales. Europe and Japan are facing less crisis on this chain.
