It still stuck at 1.2 years based on the last 3 and 6 months.... and about 3 years based on the last 12 months... so unless things change it would be about 2 years I think as clearly the slim boost wont happen again. |
No thread + Charts?
And the slim boost could happen again. All it would take would be $199 PS3. Possibly with a true "Slim" release/ colours.
Wii also lost its momentum some time ago, but seems to be rebuilding it. I don't know for PS3, last year was really remarkable for it. Well, there's Heavy Rain, FFXIII, God of War III, we just have to see if they'll hold the hardware sales during a good time.

Not in the next 1.2 years it wont. No, the gap will close (if it does) in 2012 earlierst and by then we will all be drooling over leaked PS4/720 specs... and looking at 360 and PS3 both heading towards 60 millions install base... would it actually matter by then? |
$50 cut with colours + GT5 this holiday would probably give the same momentum (or close to) as the Slim.
As for if mattering. Not really. But its still bragging rights for the companies. Im sure MS would rather say "We finished 2nd last gen" or "We won the HD war", rather than "We came 3rd, but..."
papflesje said: Well, based on what you said in another thread (and which I have been thinking about): Somehow I can see Sony not increasing production until they either pass the financial year-mark (minimize losses for the PS3) and to get them closer or into profitability with the hardware alone. Add marketing for GoW III and possibly FF XIII and it might propel them a bit more when they do start producing more. Or am I being too logical whereas Sony has not always followed logic? :p |
Sony's not getting any marketing for FF XIII. I was watching TV last night and saw three FF XIII commercials all for the 360 bundle. If people didn't know better, it's getting the marketing treatment of being a 360 exclusive. How Sony could let that happen is beyond me...
Sony should be worried about losing more than momentum. Another price cut this fall? Their magic goose must be almost cooked. Or is it a money tree? Shortages worked out really well for the Wii so it's worth a try I guess. Pretty transparent IMO. If you want to believe anyone couldn't get a PS3 in a day or two you are entitled to your opinion.
Squilliam said: I can understand your question but at this point its a little too early to ask about how the supply situation may/may not be effecting momentum. Even 1-3 months down the track with further data we still have no control so no meaningful information can likely come of this question in any case. You can speculate, but isn't that a little too much 'fanboy' for your tastes? |
My question is related to my own deductions and have no bias towards one console or another. You think you're reading between the lines, but that text doesn't exist.
I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
libellule said: so bascially, not enought shipped console = lose of momentum according to you ... ... I just dont agree Not meeting the demand THE month where it doesnt matter is clearly a ... non event. And X10, outside the crappy PR from Greenberg, just showed us that REACH will not dominate PS3 exclusive in the gfx departement and disapointed all the PC gamers that wanted to play Alan Wake ... good job MS. The only REAL good news : 360 was undertracked by VGC ... |
It certainly is an event. Look at this site. Reaction too the NPD numbers certainly was an event. It's not the static numbers, but the general perception of your potential fanbase that sways momentum most often. It's not about the loss of a few sales, but the PR that said loss generates for you and your competition.
That's why I think this, and future repetitions of this, is potentially significant.
How would our perception change of the PS3's sales dominance if Sony loses every NPD this year due to lack of supply, for example, and how is public perception related to sales. Well, marketing is based around the theory that public perception is related to sales, otherwise, it wouldn't exist.

Reasonable said: I don't think Sony lost momentum as such, but they did miss the chance to gain a bit more in US. This isn't just Sony though, it's down to the stores too. The retailers will decide how many PS3s they want to buy, and I bet that they underestimated Slim demand in US vs 360 because they'd be going on past sales. So WW I think PS3 momentum is more or less what it was (360 too) but in US they didn't hit quite as hard as they could, although I don't think they lost anything as such. |
Good point, again, I theorize that with ample supply, another supply cut could be a knockdown blow. In this case, I believe that not taking advantage of an opportunity to increase your momentum can be just as bad as losing it.

Actually I am pretty sure ms would be happy with an effective draw... which is the worst they can expect now this gen. Start of this gen... some guy says "ms will sell approximately 60m 360's by 2012 and they will be very close to the PS3 perhaps even above"..... other guy says "wtf are you on?..you are insane" And imo a $50 cut and colours wont be anywhere near as big as the slim + $100 cut. Not even close. |
True, but im pretty sure MS would love to keep the lead they have had the entire gen. Especially with the effort they put in.
As for the $50 cut + Colours... You never know. Anythings possible. If a few month before the Slim released i said to you that the PS3 will be close to 1 million in a single week and still be over 900k the week after, you would have laughed at me.
