It certainly is an event. Look at this site. Reaction too the NPD numbers certainly was an event. It's not the static numbers, but the general perception of your potential fanbase that sways momentum most often. It's not about the loss of a few sales, but the PR that said loss generates for you and your competition.
That's why I think this, and future repetitions of this, is potentially significant.
How would our perception change of the PS3's sales dominance if Sony loses every NPD this year due to lack of supply, for example, and how is public perception related to sales. Well, marketing is based around the theory that public perception is related to sales, otherwise, it wouldn't exist.
