Epic: Mobile to match game console power

Developer and 3D engine provider says phones are a 'bridge to the future'

Epic Games VP Mark Rein believes that mobile devices will be comparable with consoles such as PS3 and Xbox 360 “within a few short years”.

Speaking to ME sister site Develop, Rein offered praise for Tegra 2 – Nvidia’s latest system-on-a-chip for mobile devices – suggesting it would fit well with his own company's Unreal Engine 3.

Rein said: “Tegra 2 isn’t ‘lower spec stuff... It is definitely about the future rather than the past. Tegra 2 features a high-speed dual-core architecture mated to a DX9-class GPU with a decent amount of memory and a good bus speed.

“It is amazingly powerful for a mobile platform and performs well within the power range that you’d want for Unreal Engine 3, so it could be a good fit for our engine.”

Rein said Tegra offers a bridge to the future of mobile game devices.

come back after 5-10 years

Wasn't the Tegra 2 the one rumored to be in the next DS?

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

True, but it wont worth it financially to launch Gears-like games for mobile phones in the next decade

Yes it was.

Tegra makes my pants fit tighter. Take that how you will.

Tegra 2 is awesome but its no where near ps360. The best we can hope for is geforce 3-4 level performance.

Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.

5 THINGS I'd like to see before i knock out:

a. a AAA 3D sonic title

b. a nintendo developed game that has a "M rating"

c. redesgined PS controller

d. SEGA back in the console business

e. M$ out of the OS business

Considering the PSP is now 5 years old it's to be expected that we'll be seeing considerably better graphics on handheld devices by now, at least on hardware about the size of an original PSP. We should still be seeing great graphics on smaller devices, so we can expect the next DS to be very nice graphically even if it isn't pushing the limits of handheld graphics.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Then how do u explain that Quake 3 runs in only 35 FPS with these shitty graphics on Tegra?

Looks exactly like GeForce 3 to me.
