Decade ain't done yet but for me, FFX hands down.
I would say something between Resident Evil 4, God of War 2, MGS3, Civilization 4 and Warcraft 3

After much thought I'm going to say Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. This game was developed by a little known and now dead developer called Troika Games. It may have been buggy as hell but it offered the perfect blend of FPS action (driven by the half-life 2 engine), indepth roleplaying mechanics, excellent choice in how you can approach the various objectives, multiple gameplay styles and an excellent setting created by White Wolf. The writing was near unparralled (play the game as an insane Malkavian to see what I mean, the dialogue for that vampire clan is completely different) and the developers choice to only give experience points for completing quests essentially made completing sidequests a neccessity. This is topped off by very good atmosphere. It was released exclusively on the pc. Whilst there are plenty of games I think were more innovative such as Deus Ex, Portal etc (though this holds its own with the best of them). For sheer fun, replay value, innovation all wrapped in one I keep coming back to this game. Plus it has very funny radio advertisements within it.
So what was YOUR game of the decade? |
Hey, someone else liked it! I couldn't put it as my game of the decade, mainly due to the way it collapsed right at the end and went combat only, but it was very, very good and I thought way overlooked. It's funny all the adulation heaped on something like Mass Effect 1 & 2 (very good games both admited) when neither has a single quest to equal the best in a title like this.
I'd probably put Deus Ex or Half Life 2 just ahead of it. Although I find it hard to narrow these things down, as I then start thinking about games like SOTC, and lots of others too.
Okay, Deus Ex. Subject to change. But probably Deus Ex.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
Unfortunately Troika were a financially troubled company and they had to work without pay to release the last patch before collapsing. The ending whilst weaker then the rest of the game is still good enough. I doubt Troika had a choice in the matter in the end.
Deus Ex on the other hand is a great choice, especially when one takes innovation into account.
Either Deus Ex, Half-Life 2 with episodes or Baldur's Gate II, I honestly can't decide between these gems!
I cant decide on a definite favourite, but because not many people will have even heard of this, I'll go with Freelancer; by no means the best game of the decade overall but in terms of how much I played that damn game and the fun I had with it, its up there for me.
