Forums - Gaming Discussion - EA Spends $2.6m (estimated USD) to air commercial during Super Bowl

So they chose to advertise a lackluster title instead of their sports games on a sports event?

...I guess

I'm doubting it will work.

How many people who watch the Super Bowl even know who Dante is? Or the meaning of the word Inferno for that matter...

I don't think anyone knows what the fuck Quantum of Solace means, but that movie did alright :P

Because it also has 007 in the title :P

If they make $20 per game sold they "only" need to sell 130,000 games to pay for the ad. We know the pre-orders for the game, so if week 1 actual sales is significantly more / about expected / less than what pre-orders normally indicate you'll have your answer as to whether the ad was worth it. If the ad has any selling potential it might last 2 or 3 weeks, but still expect the main effect to be in the first week.

The ad might reach 100 million people but the PS360 install base in the whole of the Americas only 34 million (less dead consoles). OK, OK 2.4 people per household = 81.6 million people so it puts it up there, but still a lot of PS360 owners are not American football fans / watchers, and 34 million is the whole of the Americas not just USA.

The good thing about it doing well on PS3 is that it would be a good sign for the main course coming in March. It would seem nothing in the H'n'S genre has really got people buying yet, including on 360. Even the highly acclaimed Bayonetta and the well reviewed Darksiders aren't setting the world on fire.

I just noticed that EA actually used an advertising agency to make the ad. So add the cost of making the ad to that figure.

The problem with the Super Bowl ads is you're competing against a lot of other ads. Chances are the ad will be forgotten unless it's one of the best.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

Well, looking at stereotypes...superbowls fanatics are probably males 18-30, xbox360 owners because thats the "cool macho" console, who only buy hyped games with lots of violence and gore. So it that respect the add is worth the cost.

Not my personal view by the way, just a stereotypical view of advertisement agencies.

Dante's Inferno is actually quite a popular literature novel........well popular in comparison to other literary novels involving Heaven or Hell.  Divine Comedy would be another.

Actually I think Inferno is the first part of the Divine Comedy... correct me if I'm wrong.

My point is, you put together a video of a hack-n-slash with pussified music and end it with an obscure title that most people aren't familiar with... then show it together with tons of other good ads, I just don't think it will have a big impact.

not to mention the commercial itself sucked.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Yeah I watched it after I first posted here, actually... missed opportunity if I've ever seen one. The music has nothing to do with the tone of the gameplay being shown, and I don't think the contrast really works here. It's supposed to be a badass game where you go to hell, not an artistic noire experience that would benefit from the contrast between ugly video with "pretty" music.

I understand that they don't want to make the ad too aggressive given the mainstream audience but... in that case is it really worth it to make a Super Bowl Ad?

I guess we'll see how it goes.

The ad wasn't interesting at all, but at least people took notice of the game....
