Forums - Gaming Discussion - Pachter EA Makes Games "People Don't Want"

I like it how he didn't include the most obvious example, Dead Space Extraction, a game people REALLY didn't want as soon as they heard it was on rails (and said it very loudly). Probably because if he included that he would be detracting from what he considers one of the strongest cornerstones of the "3rd party core games don't sell on the Wii" argument. After all it has always a strong effect to say "look at dead space extraction - very good reviews yet only 9000 copies sold". So god forbid one should waste this in an "EA makes games people don't want" argument.

Seriously, this.  Patcher's cognitive dissonance constantly floors me.

I don't think that suits the example, as that is a game using previous logic would have been deemed to have a market. Afterall, previous on-rails games had sold 1 million + copies on the Wii, are reasonably popular on other consoles and the zombie / alien type horror vibe had a good record after Resdient Evil sales.

He's more refering to stuff like The Saboteur, Mirror's Edge and Brutal Legend. EA pump tons of money into making and marketing these games, expecting them to sell millions of copies, despite the fact that nothing of that nature has ever sold amazingly well. It's feels like the EA execs think like the people who don't follow video games, and assume that because a game like say, Okami is a AAA amazing game which won numerous GOTY awards, that'll instantly qualify it as a huge seller. We know it doesn't work like that yet EA keep using this reasoning to inflate these games budgets.

Patcher and the ND guy were really arguing the same point but from two perspectives - Patcher was on about the busines side, and how these games are huge financial risks - perhaps a more short term viewpoint. Whereas the ND guy was talking about the long-term importance to the industry as a whole, to keep investing in new fresh ideas.

EA have done wuite well this gen in terms of games and new IPs I thought. They have Bioware constantly bringing out top quality games, still have all there sports titles and have branched off into new IP territory. Mirror's Edge and Dead Space both broke 1 million and are both deserving of sequels. They've had some crap this gen but they've still had some decent selling titles.

Yes, they produce new and original IPs. But those don't sell. That's what he is trying to say. Half of these posts are hate based Pachter bs like allways.

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising

Pachter is an idiot...that I DON'T WANT to listen to anymore. He is WORTHLESS.

Michael Patcher is that kid in junior high school that has every system, gets almost every game, only opens 2 of them, thinks he knows more than anyone else, if you mention a game he buys it just to say that he has it,..... but....... has never ever ever, finished any of his games, and he's met Cliff Blezinski, Miyamoto, that guy that made god of war, has a signed photo that he lost in his closet. he has a sega genesis even though he is only twelve. wears video game t-shirts,............. oh yea, and everyone hates him!

my signature went on strike, it's demanding 3% raise

I.... agree with patcher?

I've never bought an EA game. He might be right.

I think EA suck at marketing their brand as well anymore. Many people have proven in this thread that they don't realise all the games EA have been involved with. I remember in the 90's that every EA game you knew for certain was theirs due to the heavy branding, perhaps they toned back recently to lose the bad name they were getting for milking franchises.

I think Patcher's arguments once again are seriously flawed and to a degree outdated already.

Jason is really good, but only if you apply what he said to third parties.

Look at 2 of his points.

1.Games dont sell over 20 million
2. All franchises have to die.

And this is true, unless your Nintendo.Being able to do both of these things is part of their success

nintendo fanboy, but the good kind

proud soldier of nintopia

Well didn't EA make more original IP's the last few years than they did before?
