Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare   vs.   Grand Theft Auto 4

Description: Today’s Sales Battle of the Day is between the two biggest 3^rd party multiplatform games of this generation. So let’s look at the numbers.

Note: I’m not including the DS version of COD:MW  because the game is too different, and I’m not speculating about the upcoming Wii version, because with the added subtitle I’m saying it is a different game (and it would make the battle between the two games less interesting).

What Call of Duty has going…

For it – Strong legs, outselling Grand Theft Auto 4 on a weekly basis despite being out much longer. A franchise that is building momentum, with the upcoming release of the sequel.

Against it- Has to overcome a >700k sales gap.  The sequel might slow down the sales of the original.

What Grand Theft Auto 4 has going…

For it- A >700k lead.  Sales increased with increase in hardware sales last week. Has not had a rerelease.

Against it – Being outsold on a weekly basis.  Sales of the game have been frontloaded compared to other entries in the series.

wow such a fall for the GTA franchise

two years ao if I said a call of duty game will sell close to a GTA game I'd be called a fool!

My thoughts exactly Cod4 has really turn the series around.

Just a little note: CoD4 doesn't have a Platinum/Greatest Hits edition either. Even the non GOTY edition is ~$50.

@ Barozi thanks for the compliment and the information. I thought that Modern Warfare already had a discounted rerelease, I must have been confusing that with the Game of the Year Edition though.

It's because GTA IV was crap, GTA peaked at Vice City :(

Seems like Grand Theft Auto 4, has a couple more votes, is that because people think Modern Warfare will stop selling when Modern Warfare 2 is released?

Iagree that the games are a lot closer sales wise then anybody would have thought a couple years ago, but I do think it is mainly the rise of Call of Duty instead of the fall (although I think it has fallen slightly) of Grand Theft Auto.

The J man should really start getting paid vg$ for correcting people these days.

GTA SA is the most complete , most fun gta in the series and is far above them as a whole game as well.
