Seems like I'm one of the first few VGcharters to own this game, so here is a little insight on how well this game performed on Christmas day over here.
This household has been following the game's development ever since Namco Bandai announced it. My sister fell in love with it at first sight, after reading a few positive impressions on the game I didn't mind checking it out and having a chance to play some new gameplay. After reading some reviews and checking the varied music selection, we decided to take the plunge and import it for Christmas.
Here comes the 25th and We Cheer has to compete for our limited time with three other Wii games, those are Okami, Trauma Center: New Blood and Wii Music. Okami's a pretty game but it started rather slow, so it lost its time to shine. Trauma Center had its coop feature blown out and is great but the operations seemed very similar to the previous game (lets see how that develops). And Wii Music was great to fiddle with, have to put more time in it so at least some tunes comes out right.
We Cheer's first hour was a little daunting, the steep learning curve controls aren't a breeze and I could see my sister getting frustrated (same thing many reviews point out). After creating her cheerleader she jumped straight into championship and failed song after song, even one star song's like Hoku's "Perfect Day" were out of reach (and it's still out of her reach, although she has completed harder songs).
Later that afternoon we tried the Cheer Off mode to practice while competing with each other. It's one of the few games were she is able to beat me, solely because I'm a dancing clutz. Still while playing this mode the controls and rythem started to click and in no time started beating songs in the Championship. It was here when it's addictive gameplay started taking over. And dominated the rest of the day!
The game ovbiously isn't aimed at the "hardcore" crowd who would die before touching a game like this. But for it's target audience (and others who don't mind to experiment) its not a bad game, if you can look past the candy covered theme the game is a blast.
