Forums - Gaming - What Retro game are you playing?

Not sure if there was already a topic about this if not then hey now there is!

Since i mostly play retro games i figured why not talk about them more.

Atm playing 2 games back and forth,

Dragon questV on the ps2, love the time jumps and there are some really good storyline moments, also i LOVE the worldmap i wish more games on the ps2 had that.

Grinding on the casino to get those sweet metal weapon.

Also final fantasy 9 once again for like the 16th time, man this game is so damn good, no wonder its mine second best game of all time, the music and its setting, the characters even thou i dont really care about quina and uh  flaming amarant, they should have included beatrix as a playable character instead.

I also love there is soo much to do in this game and the way you get abilities.

Kuja is a great villian be he...uhh...she?,noo he? Isnt sephiroth.

Soo,which retro game(s) are you playing?

At the moment, flitting between:

Yoshi's Island (up to world 2-7 so far, got 100 score on every level up to this point)
Ocarina of Time (on way to Goron City as a child)
Donkey Kong Country (on world 5)

And also planning starting another run of Dino Crisis soon.

Funny enough, been playing some classic educational PC games with my daughter as she gets ready to start going to school in August.

So far, we've been able to play

Reading Mansion
Millie's Math House
Fisher Price - Ready for School (Going to Kinderville)
Thinking Things (So far, Collections 1 and 2)
Math Blaster
Create & Draw in Elmo's World

We had it so good in the 90s when it came to fun educational games. I'm doing this through a VM. Windows 98 on VirtualBox. I'm working on getting Windows 95 and even XP up and running as well as there are games I would like to play that aren't easily playable on modern PCs.

You've made me think of Gizmos and Gadgets. What a game that was.

Nothing at the moment, but I want to find the time to play Majora via N64 Recomp, I have 4k textures that work great along with 120 fps support.

Resi4 on Steam, without mods

My Etsy store

My Ebay store

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

Oof… reading this just hurts my stomach. Lol! Don’t get me wrong, I love running all my games at max settings, but there’s a certain charm that is lost when you change too much. Especially with N64.

My personal recommendation: CRT shaders on RetroArch running at 60-120fps. Don’t alter the textures. Just my two cents. Hope you enjoy your time MM, in any case! Great game. :)

OT: I recently did my first playthrough of NSMBWii and SMB2 USA. Those were fun!

At the moment? Let me get my list, as there are quite a few I launch right now...

PC:

  • Baldur's Gate I and II
  • KotOR I and II
  • Fantasy General
  • Cristal Caves
  • Diablo I and II
  • Das Schwarze Auge (The Dark Eye): Drakensang
  • Jagged Alliance I and II
  • Majesty
  • Might & Magic III-VI (VII and VIII are bugging out on me right now...)
  • Serious Sam: TFE
  • Vampire: The Masquerade: Redemption
  • Wizardry 8

Wizardry I: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is a special case: It's a remake/remaster; it's built upon the original, but with brand new graphics and quality-of-life updates. But if you play with the original settings and graphics, you're pretty much playing a 1981 Apple ][ game.

Console (most though the virtual console of the Switch, though I'll dust off my DS soon):

  • Chibi Robo
  • Earthbound
  • Paper Mario
  • Super Mario Bros 3
  • The Legend of Zelda 1, The Adventure of Link and A Link to the Past
  • Space Harrier
  • Wonder Boy in Monster Land
  • Shining in the Darkness
  • Mortal Kombat 1-4

Depends on the game.  I go through phases, sometimes I like keeping the original intent, other times I like seeing what could have been done had technology been available.
