Forums - Gaming - Nvidia reveals DLSS 5 , essentially applies AI filter to games in real time.

This is of course both crazy impressive on a technical level and also artistically awful in many ways. WTF did they do to Grace Ashcroft?

Anyway share you thoughts. Even on the lighting side which is more objectively good, I'm a bit iffy about so drastically changing the way a game was designed to look.

Looks like every other AI generated image of a person. Can’t even recognize it’s supposed to be someone specific.

I guess we’ve come so far graphically that graphics engineers don’t know where to go from here.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

I think as game assets are developed with it in mind the aesthetics will be fine.

The Grace example definitely changed her look by making it look like she has strong makeup on, but that was likely because the assets, when they were created, weren't tested with this technology.

If you look at the other examples, like Leon as an example, I think the aesthetic shift isn't as pronounced.

Edit: I hope Nvidia releases the option to use a second card for DLSS to consumers. Multi-GPU builds (outside niche lossless scaling use-cases) would be kind of cool.

The combination of new lighting and detail with the piss-poor animations in the Bethesda titles was not flattering. This looks likely to steer games away from the originally intended vision, in visual terms anyway.

Grace aged ten years lol

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Apparently the developers have full artistic control, and Capcom actually worked on this enhancement. Hmm...

Looks completely like someone used Google Gemini. As much as I hate it, you do not have to use DLSS5; although that is what is going to sell nvidia GPU.

DLSS5 off vs on

This is VERY interesting in how drastic things change, but how little things did change according to NVIDIA. And I think the original poster should definitely update his post to make this clear: DLSS 5 is NOT touching the original models, polygons, textures or materials in ANY way. I already see a lot of people claiming they changed Grace's face (and others) with AI slop. And I get that, but that is not what is happening here. Just slapping on AI slop assets over the top would definitely be wrong.

DLSS 5 ONLY changes the the way lighting is hitting those original models/polygons/textures/materials. That's it. JUST the lighting.

And yeah - WOW, is there a massive change is how things look because of that.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it yet, but again, in the Grace example - THAT is her ORIGINAL face. Her lips, eyes, etc. - all that changed is how the lighting is reacting to those things. It really is crazy how different it looks.
