The big discount did wonders to boost PS5 sales. PS5 outselling the Switch 2 in Spain isn't a surprise. Though, by how much is a bit of a surprise. Switch 1 took a few of years before it outsold the PS4 in Spain for a calendar year if I recall. Right now what matters is how Switch 2 is doing compared to the launch aligned sales of Switch 1 and other consoles.

France is really the one country where Nintendo is bigger or at least as big as PlayStation when it comes to Europe.

Not surprising, PS is incredibly strong in Europe, and PS4 outsold Switch 1 pretty easily there.

Nintendo will be happy that they are starting to carve out a decent second fiddle role in Europe, they are far from doing Xbox sales numbers there, so Europe can be a decently good market for them, but they are not a PS competitor in the European market.

Another factor that lowers the Switch 2 appeal in markets like Europe is that basically every major third party game that blew up in popularity this year is skipping Switch 2, doesn't matter if its Arc Raiders, Battlefield 6, Clair Obscur etc. You basically have to be a big Nintendo fan to pick up a Switch 2 instead of a PS5 in Europe this year. And unlike in the US and Japan, Nintendo can't really compensate the lack of those third party releases with their own IP because Nintendo nostalgia and popularity of Nintendo IP in Europe is just so much lower than in the US and Japan.

Switch 2 missing out on live service games also lowers its appeal in Europe, PS5 is fully dominated by live service games looking at its most played charts, so that is what people buy PS5 for, and Switch 2 is mostly useless in that regard.

The PS5 and Switch 2 sales are not the surprising part of the week there. Only 700 Xbox Series X/S were sold and 1400 Xbox ones were sold! That's right, the XBone is back baby! :)

As per the article, the Switch 2 was discounted by 50 euros.
It's not usual for a system to go sale that launched less than six months ago.

For a five year old PS5 (even with 150 off) to outsell it by over 4 to 1 is quite impressive.

And why would it be a surprise for you that PS is more popular than Nintendo in Europe?

PS4 sold 3,9M units in Spain, Switch 1 sold 3,5M units in Spain. That means even though Switch 1 sold much more than PS4 WW, in Spain PS is more popular. So yes you would expect PS5 to sell more than Switch 2 in Spain as well.

How does this compare to last year and for the PS4 2018?

Honestly, the real surprise is the Hades 2 for Switch 2 sold more than Pokémon Legends Z-A and Kirby combined.

And that is a nice surprised! A good game selling better than "trash Pokemon" and "mid Kirby".

The PS5 did 29k the week before BF in Spain for 2024.
