Re-started watching the entire anime on May 2022 and finished as of today on October 2025 - almost three and half years.

Watched all the mainline episodes, ONAs, OVAs, Specials, Shorts and Movies.

Thanks to Netflix and Youtube for having majority if not all the anime lol

I'll be rewatching Horizons (which is the successor) after dropping it at episode 39 due to the Japanese names being used for the Pokemon. Planning to rewatch it when I start playing Pokemon Scarlet soon.

What are your thoughts on Ash and the Pokemon anime?

I originally started watching the anime back in late 1990s when the anime first came out but didnt watch it completely until recently.

Around the Network

I did the same as you. I've watched Pokémon since its release in the West but stopped after the voice cast was changed here in Brazil in the transition between the second and the third XY season in 2016.

Some years later, in 2021 I started watching everything again, since the beginning, up to the season I had dropped and onwards. I finished it all around early 2024.

It was definetly a fun ride overall. Pokémon was the cozy TV show I would turn on and get some 22 min of dopanine while having dinner or launch. I remember I would generally watch 3 episodes per day. Some parts of the show was a little bit hard to endure, though. The Johto episodes are infame for a reason. The episodes got too formulaic at some point and nothing really exciting happened for a great streach of episodes. The Best Whish episodes were the worst in my opinion. The change in Team Rocket's personallity was extremelly annoying to me, Ash's party wasn't interesting and the League Arc was pathetic. Things got better only during the Decolora season. And, although I liked Sun/Moon season, I felt that the Ash staying in one local instead of going on a journey through a whole region, going from town to town was a better formula for the anime. At least, the setting was consistent, the Alola region, the islands, the culture and citizen of the region... Journey takes the premisse of Sun/Moon anime and makes it worse. I really hated how all the Pokémon World was depicted in the Journey seasons. Until very recently, the Pokémon World was like a fantastic world that had parallels with ours but with its own quirks. For example, we had Pokéballs, which from our world's perspective is a high-tech sci-fi extraordinary product, and in the Pokémon World, that is just an ordinary daily object. Cellphones, internet and other stuff, on the other hand, was no where to be seen on the Pokémon world. The Pokémon World itself used to be less integrated and, thus, mysteryous and impressive. Remember when people from a region would react impressive to a Pokémon from another region? Remember that going to another region would mean an exciting travel? It started in XY but by Journeys, the Pokémon World got too much globalized to me, with everyone knowing about everything (Pokemon, regions) from other places and traveling with ease between regions. Funnily enough, by the time of Journey, I really missed the vibes from Johto filler episodes. Yeah, I think that I may dislike Journeys even more than Best Wishes

The transformation of the Pokémon World in a "real world but with Pokémon" have been happening in most recent games, unfortunately. I mean, people taking selfies with a rotom-phone, characters who are streamers... The fantastic elemet of the Pokémon world have been lost in my opinion.

Well, but after so much negative comments, it's fair to highlight the positives. I really enjoy the first season, the Indigo League. The humour is sharp and smart, the original trio worked very well together, the elements of the Pokémon World was fresh and interesting, the league was awsome, very few boring episodes. The Orange League I used to like better when I watched it when I was younger, but I still find it almost at the same level of the Indigo Season. Despite having talked bad of Johto, I still like it overall. And the Advance and Diamond/Pearl were a delight in my opinion. People tend to prefere the Diamond/Pearl series more, but I prefer the Advance series, though. I think the Diamond/Pearl episodes sometimes take them too seriously, like the whole plot involving the Team Galatic (the same problem I had with Team Plasma and Team Rocket in Unova).

Yeah, I think that for me, Pokémon was a 9/10 from first until the last season of Diamond/Pearl. After that it was a 7/10, with the best moments being the X/Y and Sun/Moon seasons and the Coronation Tournament leading to Ash winning the whole thing. And although not very exciting, I quite enjoyed the final 13 episodes with Ash, Misty and Brock again reunited.

To finish things up, I'm just gonna say It's a shame we didn't have a proper return of May and Max during Journeys. I know May's Japanese voice actor have health problems that prevents her to voice May, but, still...

If you enjoyed it it was time well spent but I kind of wonder if you enjoyed it all the way through.

I started it a few years ago but *only* did the first 150 episodes or so.

Never getting through 1232 episodes.

Now you have to do onepiece.

Mood. I can't dedicate myself to over 1200 episodes (even though they are under 30 minutes) plus movies and specials.

It's why I can't watch One Piece either. It's over 1,100 episodes right now plus movies and specials.

I watched the whole main Walking Dead show from 2017 to 2022 (about 240.5 hours) and that is more or less the upper limit of a show length I can watch even over years and years. My typical limit of a show is stuff like Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, which I obviously highly recommend both. Breaking Bad is about 49 hours and Better Call Saul is about 52 hours. As much as I enjoy The Walking Dead, both BB and BCS combined are a better use of one's time than watching the entirety of the core The Walking Dead show and still shorter.

My other typical limit is stuff like TMNT 1987 and TMNT 2003. The 1987-1996 series is about 71 hours and the 2003 series is about 57 hours.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Yes I did, especially Sun & Moon and Journeys - way better than the first 3 generations (Kanto, Johto and Hoenn).

Already done - same with Detective Conan which is longer than One Piece and Pokemon as well combined with all the stuff it has.
Watched all of the movies (25+), specials, OVAs, ONAs for Detective Conan.
This is my currently watching anime list.

When I started re-watching One Piece back in 2009 , it was like around episode 600 or something like that. Took me a good 9 months of back to back watching.

Detective Conan took me about 4 and half years to catch up and Pokemon 3 and half years.

I'm going to catch up to Lupin the Third next or possibly the smaller anime compared to the giants (Bleach, Inuyasha, etc).

At the moment going through Apothecary diaries and then gonna binge on Dr Stone (already finished Season 1).

I caught up to Seven Deadly Sins within 6 months with all of its seasons, specials, OVAs, ONAs and Movies earlier this year as well.

Game wise - favorite regions (cant choose one) is Hoenn (3rd gen), Unova (5th gen) and Alola (7th gen) - I also like Kanto but that was probably cause of Nostalgia, going by this, maybe I'll love 9th gen (Scarlet/violet)'s region lol.

Anime wise - favorite region was Alola (I love beach themes)

Best animation imo was Journeys (but Journeys was across all regions) - prior to Journeys, I actually like Sun and Moon, so Alola despite the controversial Ash design lol

Best movie...is kinda hard, I liked quite a few

-Pokemon The First Movie (the original #1, the remake was horrible)

-Pokemon The Movie 2000 (Movie #2) I enjoyed a lot but might be because of nostalgia for 2nd gen

-Pokemon 4ever's (Movie #4) story and overall animation was great

-Pokemon Jirachi Wish Maker (Movie #6) was a great movie too for the same reason as 4ever

-Pokemon Heroes (Movie #5) imo had the best cast of characters and story so this is likely my favorite movie of the bunch

-Pokemon Lucario and the Mystery of Mew (Movie #8) I enjoyed a lot too

-Pokemon I choose You (Movie #20) was a great reboot

-Pokemon The Power Of Us (Movie #21) was a great follow up to Movie #20 - sad that they dont make movies anymore, honestly a reboot, separate timeline from the main story was the best thing they did honestly. If I exclude movie #5, I would say Movie #21 would be my favorite.

Sadly Movie #22 (Mewtwo strikes back - the remake of movie #1) and movie #23 (Secrets of the Jungle) which is the Tarzan of the Pokemon series, was horrible, probably why they stopped making movies.

I wonder if there's a list of Pokemon episodes without fillers. I remember watching the Johto seasons eons ago and by god that did take a while.

Yes, there is. But the pages are in portuguese, though. But you can base yourself on the number order of the episodes, and check the japanese title of the episode in parenthesis (it is translated to portuguese, but you compare to an English translation of the the japanese title)
