Forums - Nintendo - The GL/GR buttons are an underrated feature of the Switch 2 controller

One thing I've always disliked with modern controllers is L3/R3 or "clicking the stick" to sprint or whatever, it feels like shit and just isn't as responsive or satisfying as a proper button.

This has bugged me for years, but on Switch 2 it's no longer an issue due to the GR/GL buttons; I assigned these to "L3/R3" and it feels a million times better, it's honestly one of my favourite new features of Switch 2.

It's one of those cases where a little thing that I didn't think much of pre-launch actually turned out to be a gamechanger. (Literally heh)

I have wanted macro back buttons to become standard for years. So dumb, its premium only controllers or I had to buy 3rd party to get them, like the 8bitdo Ultimate. Which is a great controller. I hope Sony and MS follow suit. But I also hope MS and Sony use Hall effect Joysticks. Something SEGA solved with the SEGA Saturn in 1995.

I've still yet to buy a Pro control, but will likely get one for Metroid Prime 4 so looking forward to putting it through it to the test. Glad Nintendo actually pushed the boat out a tad

I've never really had an issue with the L3 to sprint thing. Sure pressing the stick is more awkward than a button but it's not like you're pressing it for an action like jump.

Never felt the need to use the back buttons on controllers or handhelds like the deck/ally. The only time I use them is when I'm playing a game without gamepad support that needs more bindings than I have other buttons.

But yeah... even if this was a vital feature for me I still wouldn't consider the overpriced Switch 2 Pro Controller. The 8BitDo ultimate also has back buttons you can remap to any other button, and works on Switch 2.

Yeah, they are nice, but honestly, as other have pointed out, 8BitDo Ultimate is the way to go, which has those, as well as Hall effect thumbsticks.

If only the Pro Controller had a decent D-Pad...

I have mixed experiences with third party controllers, so I tend to stick to official ones.

Never had any issues with the Switch 1 Pro controller, which made me feel confident picking up the new one.

8bitdo is legit quality, and the build quality is better than Nintendo/MS and Sony's. Rock solid controller. No creaking. Hall effect sticks never need to worry about drift. 20 hour battery life.

It does sound good, but I'm fine with my official one for the present. My Switch 1 Pro controller never drifted even after years of extensive use, and I generally find third party stuff's just not as comfortable.
