It is time for Poland! Another powerhouse of European video game development. CD Project Red has obviously skyrocketed to being an industry giant over the past decade. Their parent company even has one of the biggest online PC game store fronts, GOG (good old games), offering games without DRM! But several other AAA developers and smaller studios also have their offices in Poland.

Some Polish developers and their games:

CD Project Red

Their debut from 2007, The Witcher gained some interest, the sequel The Witcher 2: The Assassins of Kings got strong acclaim, but the third entry in the series The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt absolutely exploded and has become one of the most talked about games of the last 10 years, getting released on pretty much everything, and winning a stack of awards. They followed it up with some smaller releases, such as Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, expanding the lore. In 2020 they then released the very ambitious Cyberpunk 2077, and we all know how that launch went… Thankfully, several patches and a major DLC later, the game finally lived up to the promise and has gotten a dedicated fanbase.

Notable games:

The Witcher

The Witcher 2: The Assassins of Kings

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales

Cyberpunk 2077

Techland

Almost as prolific is Techland, which are behind several big franchises, Dying Light, Call of Juarez and Dead Island. Covering several genres, they just seem to be spitting out AAA success after AAA success.

Notable games:

The Call of Juarez

The Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

The Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Dead Island

Dying Light

Dying Light 2

11 Bit Studios

Another very versatile developer, maybe mostly known for the city builder series, Frostpunk, but before that they made the very unique and dire This War of Mine. Their latest game The Alters just came out and got great reviews.

Notable games:

Anomaly: Warzone Earth

This War of Mine

Frostpunk

Frostpunk 2

The Alters

Bloober Team

Specialized in horror titles, I think it is fair to say that they have had as many misses as successes, The A-Men games, Basement Crawl and Blair Witch all got pretty much panned. Others have been a bit more mixed, such as The Layers of Fear games, but lately they have really found their footing, first with The Medium, which overall got a really good reception, and then the remake of Silent Hill 2, which got universal acclaim. It is going to be exciting to see what is coming next.

Notable games:

Layers of Fear

Observer

The Medium

Silent Hill 2 (2024)

Teyon

Probably even more uneven than Bloober Team, Teyon deserves a bit of text here, just because of their bizarre history. They have made a ton of small titles for platforms like WiiWare. Their three big titles, have interestingly all been licensed games based on 80s action films! WTF!! One of them is generally considered one of the biggest pieces of GARBAGE in the history of the medium, Rambo: The Video Game. 2019’s Terminator: Resistance likewise got absolute slaughtered by reviewers, without reaching the same status as Rambo. But in an exciting turn-around the studio made Robocop: Rogue City, one of the most beloved licenced games of recent years.

Notable game:

Robocop: Rogue City

People can Fly

Exploding unto the scene in 2004 with the FPS Painkiller, they have since mostly been working on porting games and supporting other studios. They did co-develop Bulletstorm and Gears of War Judgment with Epic Games however, to the point where they might be considered the main developer, and is also co-developing the new Gears of War game with The Coalition.

 Notable games:

Painkiller

Bulletstorm

Gears of War: Judgment

Flying Wild Hog

Revitalizing the Shadow Warrior series, the output has been a little mixed, the third game in the series was not so well received, but the first two got solid reviews. Their most recent game Evil West also got some praise.

Notable games:

Hard Reset

Shadow Warrior (2013)

Shadow Warrior 2

Evil West

Other games to consider:

Ghostrunner

Ghostrunner 2

Superhot

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter

Bulb Boy

Phantom Doctrine

Darkwood

Chernobylite

Carrion

Lots of excellent games here, the Polish really punch above their weight.

For me it's between Witcher 3, Witcher 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Bulletstorm. All three are great games with strong gameplay and style to spare.

I think I have to go with Witcher 3, but it's a close race!

Just beat Cyberpunk 2077 and thats my pick. I also really enjoyed Bulletstorm, Shadow Warrior and Painkiller. Still need to play the Silent Hill 2 remake. Man Poland has some talented ass developers.

From Polska we have The Witcher, This War of Mine, Forstpunk... and SUPERHOT, SUPER HOT.

Special shoutout to Infinite Dreams and their mobile Symbian games !

"¡Viva la Ñ!"

Looks like only Polish game I have is Xpand Rally by Techland. I did like having the Arcade and Simulation modes for two very different experiences (though it was stupid they have to be played entirely separately, even creating a different player).

At school we used to play Blockout, the 3D Tetris.

Bloober Team - Observer. Fantastic game.

Cyberpunk 2077, one of the top games of the decade and yet it released at the start of it.

Cyberpunk 2077 has really saved its reputation it seems. I hope to find the time to play it someday. I love The Witcher 3, which got my vote here.

Witcher 3 was great, but Cyberpunk is sublime. And they’re apparently not finished with it yet.

I played it on launch, it was already great then. I am playing Witcher 3 now, and the amount of game breaking bugs is comparable if not worse than Cyberpunk at launch. Had a bug that froze my entire system, took like 10 minutes to resolve, never had that for Cyberpunk.
