Forums - Gaming Discussion - Market for a playstation classic?

Tagged games:

If Sony were to produce a Playstation Classic (PC) next holiday and release it with a number of old titles or else with a cd drive for people to play ps1 games would there be a market?

They could do a version with a HDD and say 20 or 30 classics pre installed.  Or they could give it an online store for people to buy and download PS1 games.

Say if Sony were to produce 2m of these do you think they'd sell?

Honestly, they kind of already tried. The PSTV had some pretty intense PS1 Classics support, as well as PSP and PSVita support.

If they were to do anything now, it'd need to be release a driveless PS3 with an updated OS and more RAM, then increase the volume of PS2 Classics on the PlayStation Store. Give it native Dualshock 4 support and mark it at $100, then market it as the "RetroStation".

It could join the same group chats as PS4 and Vita, even during game; it can play digital PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSminis like the normal PS3, but also add in PSP and PSVita support; the new OS (preferably the PS4's Orbis OS) and extra RAM would streamline the whole experience, especially with the Store itself (the current PS3 storefront is too soon to say it really works); grant it the same streaming and sharing abilities as the PS4, to further integrate it into the "new" PlayStation ecosystem; and finally, the use of shared peripherals like the Dualshock 4 and the PlayStation Eye would further establish the RetroStation as a clear member of the PlayStation family, while the name still clearly sets it apart from the PlayStation 4 to prevent confusion.

Hell, all Sony has to do for a logo is change the P to an R.

Really depends on the games, but if they were able to get the likes of Tomb Raider, Spyro, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, Crash etc then there would definitely be a market for it and it would definitely sell.

Course I think they'd be better off releasing PS1 classics on PS4 like they are PS2 ones and maximising PS4 sales instead though.

To me it looks like licensing issues are holding back ps1 games.  Hopefully they all get remastered on ps4 though.

We already have crash trilogy and FF7.  Hopefully spyro and mgs1 are next.

It'd be much harder than Nintendo would have to deal with, because the PlayStation relied a lot more on 3rd parties. However, I also don't think that the demand would be as high, as PS1 nostalgia isn't at NES levels. However, it could be a neat little gadget, though one that I wouldn't get, as I already have a PS1.

If Sony bothered to include CD-Rom support in the Playstation 4 like the Xbox One, it could have been able to run Playstation 1 games natively. Just like the Playstation 2 and 3.

I don't think a Playstation 1 classic would hit it off as well though, plus it should end up a little more expensive than the NES classic as the games are orders-of-magnitude larger, requiring more NAND.

With that, if they included Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9... I would be all over that like flies to poop.

I don't know. I don't think the nostalgia is there. Plus the majority of PS1 games look pretty bad to me. 8 bit games have aged better because of how simple they are and you can jump in, play for ten minutes, and call it a day. PS1 games require a lot more of a time investment.

Eh on the collectors market Nintendo still rules. PS1 demand is never as high as old Nintendo systems like NES,SNES and N64. A lot of people still have a PS3 that plays PS1 games. Plus PSP,Vita,PS3 and PS4. I am sure a few would no doubt buy it but don't think the demand is nearly as high.

Those early 3D playstation games, most of them anyway, aged like ass. That's the problem. The NES and SNES games have all aged really well and are as fun to play as they were then.

I think they are better off with those games on ps store, I'm sure they make more money and don't need to have high costs of manufacturing, shipping and stuff

I think that's the reason Nintendo pulled the mini Nes, selling those games on switch will probably give more money at way lower costs
