Forums - Gaming - DriveClub final update, 15 new tracks (free)

DriveClub's saga has come to an end, at least for the non vr version. A pro update for the base game seems unlikely at this point. (Is still rumored for VR version) As a goodbye, Evolution studios has released the VR city tracks as a free update for vanilla DriveClub, and they look amazing.

Canada gets Port of Vancouver, 3 quite different layouts (unlike the Scottish city tracks, these new city track layouts vary greatly) with some sharp corners and fast straights. This one is probably the easiest of the bunch.

Chile's new tracks are in Iquique, with 2 of the 3 layouts offering a daringly fast section along the coast ending in ahairpin curve next to a sail ship. The 2nd layout is the shortest of all the city tracks, great for multiplayer mayhem.

India's tracks in Ashii are especially gorgeous, feauturing narrow urban canyons with fast successions of undulating corners followed by extremely sharp hairpins up and down the hillside.

Next is Japan's Gujo, a more rural village with many 90 degree corners to wave through. Looks especially great at night with the neon advertisements in the narrow streets.

Last but not least is Norway's Bryggen. Another daunting set of layouts, all 3 almost completely different. Daring pays off here, skipping on and off the pavement to straighen out your driving line is essential to set the best time.  One of the layouts features 4 270 degree turns, crossing back and forth over the big bridge over the harbor, including roundabouts of varying sizes to weave through.

With this final update, DriveClub features 42 unqiue tracks in 6 locations. Including different layouts that total goes up to 66, include reverse and there are 114 tracks to choose from in the menu. I don't know any other racing game with more tracks, and they're all great. There is not a single one I avoid while playing (Although the race track layouts are all pretty similar)

Farewell Evolution studios. It's a shame you got disbanded after creating the absolute finest arcade/simcade track racer since Burnout (pre paradise) and PGR were around. And with the amount of content I will say it even surpasses those. It's definitely my most played racer, even beating GT5 in time spend.

Wait, what??? Evolution is no more???? WTF????

There are some interesting differences coming back ton 2D DC after getting the plat on DC VR. (I learned to race on all this city tracks in VR first)

The first thing that stands out is how stretched out the image is on tv. Fish eye lens effect, or zoomed out, which gives you more sense of speed yet also makes it harder to see what's coming up. Perhaps it's simply the result of cramming 70 degree fov on a tv, you normally don't watch at more than 30 degree fov.

When I first started playing DC VR I noticed how everything seemed closer, more compact. After getting used to that it's now the other way around. Perhaps it was also a concession for the low resolution of VR. On the tv you're staring at a tiny section of the screen in the distance. With the decreased resolution of VR it would be very hard to see what's there.

Difference in presentation aside, it's far easier in VR to pick and stick to the best driving line, recover from drifts and judge upcoming corners. DC VR doesn't use the corner flags and doesn't need them. Braking is a lot more natural thanks to 3D and cornering is so much easier with headtracking. Look where you're going works just as in real life.

Going back to 30 fps took some getting used to as well. It looked very choppy at first. However after a few races I guess my brain adjusted and it looked fine again. Still quite jarring to switch between the two.

Back to presentation, the difference is enormous. Watching the city tracks for the first time in full 1080p with all the extra detail was a jaw dropping moment. Add rain and better lighting, I really hope DC VR will still get a pro patch. Anyway the future for racing in VR is huge. Sitting inside the very detailed cars is awesome by itself, yet it enhances the gameplay much more than that. No matter how much better it looks on tv, it's hard to go back.

Nice! I have to work tomorrow but I'll test this later for sure!

It' hard to imagine they won't give the VR a Pro patch.
And honestly, same for 2D, a Pro patch would be great, could even offer a 60fps mode.
(people usually talk about how 30-60fps is impossible, but they already did the work for higher FPS optimization for VR)
It's a shame what happened to the dev, because it seems like this game gave alot to the platform, both original and VR.

Still pissed Sony decided to throw Evolution out of the window. Driveclub passed the 2million sales mark somewhere before July 31st 2015, which isn't even that bad in the end. Should have given them another shot at the Motorstorm series, would have been a nice title for 2017 or early 2018.

I've gotten every single driveclub trophy for both the vanilla game, the bikes and all the dlc. So I've properly experienced the insane levels of support this game got.

This final update was unexpected, emotional and it's blown me away. A beautiful surprise.

Anybody know if it will get any additional trophies?

afaik the latest info is that VR version will get a Pro patch, but one with minimal effort in which they didn't at all go to the limits of the Pro - better render resolution already should make quite a big difference in VR mode though

Omg new tracks and... Free? two of my favourite things. Drive club for me was such a shame that the game didn't get a tiny bit more time in the oven ... but then once it launched the barrage of hate for it online didn't stop even after Evolution sorted out the launch issues and turned it into a game which I can't stop playing. Really top notch racer and just some of the most beautiful "next gen" looking graphical effects I've seen in a video game.

omg... you just reminded me I bought driveclub bikes a few months back but never actually played it yet :o Think a mate of mine played a single race to see what he thought of the bikes when checking out the visuals but I have that whole side of the game yet to play.
