Technical explanation:
Xbox (Green)
How does this work:
- Anything with xbox one next to each other are included
- Anything with the four words xbox one backwards compatibility anywhere in the tweet are included
- Anything with xbone are included
- Anything with xb1 are included
- Anything with the term xbox that isn’t the phrase xbox 360 are included. If a game like Tomb Raider are/is coming out for both the xbox one and the xbox 360 it is included under the OR rule. This is done because a lot of people just say I got a new xbox, and the majority of xbox only tweets are about the xbox one.
Playstation (Blue):
How does this work:
- Anything with ps4 are included
- Anything with the words playstation 4 next to each other are included
- Anything with the term playstation that isn’t the phrase playstion 3, playstation vita, or playstation 2 is included. If a game like Guilty Gear Xrd are/is coming out for the PS4 and PS3, PS4 and PSV, or all three it is included under the OR rule. This is done because a lot of people just tweet I got a new playstation, and the majority of playstation only tweets are about the playstation 4.
Wii-U (orange)
How does this work:
- Anything with wii-u is included
- Anything with wiiu is included
- Anything with wii u next to each other is included
Note: Since I can only use four OR commands I omitted the abbreviation that is hardly used and has the least impact on the charts. The impact of the removal is approximately 2,285 units for the month using xbo -xbox -xbone -xb1. The remaining xbo entrees may or may not be less than 2,285 as xbo could be a typo for many things including xbox, hbo, etc.
Note 2: Trends are not cap sensitive
Note 3: If someone would help my grammar I would appreciate it. English is my second language, but I will do my best.
Here are some examples of how the algorithms work. As you can see topsy does a great job while not being perfect.

Since people this seems to be the first social media trends for many I am including the algorithm details in this post.
