What do you prefer? 2D Sonic games or 3D Sonic games and why? Even if both have their ups and downs, I think 2D Sonic games are easily better. The majority of the good 2D Sonic games offer control. This means that you can  either speed through the stages or you go slowly and explore to find hidden goodies. They are simple and straight-foward.  Sonic Rush has the boost gameplay, but it's nowhere as important as in Unleashed, Colors and Generations. You can  do this kind of exploration in some of the 3D games, but either the controls  aren't smooth  enough or the exploration aspect is more limited ( Generations is the only 3D Sonic game that has smooth controls and tons of exploration as well)

My problem with  3D Sonic games is that most of them are either gimmicky or too flawed. I only enjoy the Sonic, Tails and Knuckles levels in the original Sonic Adventure ( I am Ok with Amy and E-102 Gamma levels), I only enjoy the Sonic and Shadow levels in SA2 ( even if  the SA1 Sonic  levels are better designed overall), Sonic Heroes is  an OK game, but it has many camera and control issues.

I don't think I need to comment on Shadow the Hedgehog or Sonic 06, Sonic and the Secret Rings has horrendous controls and the whole on-rails thing is just complete crap, Sonic Unleashed is  boost to win for the most part  and the Werehog levels are complete crap and the Black Knight has the same issues as the Secret Rings, but only worse. Colors/Generations are great and Lost World is fun, but very flawed.

So.. What do you prefer? The 2D Sonic games or 3D Sonic games?

2D, although I think the 2D Sonics are also pretty mediocre compared to other 2D platformers. They're mostly an on rail platformer. The 3D games all suck in my opinion. Bought Sonic Adventure 2 and the DX add on content on the PSN when it was on sale at one point because it's such an amazing game, etc, etc, quit after playing through two levels. If people love Sonic Adventure 2 so much, not sure why they don't like Sonic the Hedgehog PS360 as they're both just as bad in my opinion.

Well, Sonic 06 is much worse because it has many annoying  glitches, the story is complete crap, the mach speed sections are unplayable, you can't even jump on enemies to kill them and other things.

I perfer 2D Sonic games to 3D, but some 3D ones, such as Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations beat 2D games like Sonic 4.

2D Sonic games.
- Level variety was stellar back in the early releases
- Speed + Control factor was spot on with Sonic 3
- Something about the 3D sonics that when you combine speed and control, it never lives up to the games quality.
- Control, control, control. There is nothing worse in a sonic game that bad controls.
There is nothing wrong with keeping sonic as a downloadable/ 2D platformer. Sega needs to make a hard decision and bring back the sonic games of Sonic 1,2 3.
Sonic Generations was the best Sonic game since Sonic 3.

My answer to this kind of sucks. It's annoying, because I know that the 2D Sonic games are almost always better. They just are. Some of the more modern ones suck because the introduce the 3D's cancerous boost and homing attacks, but I think the 2D games perfected themselves with the Sonic Advance series.

That being said, I know that 3D Sonic has the makings to be so much better than the 2D ones. There has never been a good 3D Sonic game. There have been slight slashes of potential, but even the best one (Sonic Lost World) had deep flaws. The Sonic Adventure series is literally unplayable to me. I don't understand how anyone can enjoy those crap games.

3D Sonic can be better than 2D Sonic, but the need to fix some things. And they need to take a page out of Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy to do it.

1. STOP changing Sonic's core mechanics! In Sonic you run, jump, and gain momentum. That's it. Stop it with the homing, and the boosting.

2. STOP fucking up the camera! It's 2014. How is Sonic Lost world the only 3D Sonic with a competent camera!?

3. STOP putting 2D levels or sections in the game! This shouldn't even have to be a point. This is a 3D game! Leave the 2D levels for 2D Sonic games.

4. STOP making the games so short! It's a level based game. We get it. We love it. How does Mario Galaxy have over 100 levels and Lost World can barely reach anything close to that many 3D levels?

5. STOP trying to make Sonic and action adventure game! Sonic is a speedy platformer. The game is about running and jumping, not stopping and fighting. Not exploration and puzzle solving. Enemies are made to be obstacles, not sparring partners. I can forgive Sonic Boom, because it's a spin off, but stop making the main games center around that shit. And before I get a shit storm, I'm not saying that a Sonic game can't have elements of exploration, but the game shouldn't center around it.

6. STOP dividing gameplay sections with specific characters! There should NEVER be a "Knuckles level" or a "Tail level." You get 100+ stages, where you unlock characters along the way that play pretty much the same with unique quirks for variety, and every character can complete every stage.

7. STOP adding 100+ playable characters! Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. That's all we'll ever need.

Basically, make Sonic Adventures 2 3D with 100+ stages.

2d unless they managed to capture that feeling of the first Sonic Adventure game which I thought was great at the time. I do think Sonic Boom looks to try but I'll wait to hear more impressions etc as it gets closer to release.
