Free games apparently brings in few subscribers, even if they're stellar.

According to Sony, PS+ subscribers tripled since the launch of PS4. The PS3 and Vita have a massive userbase combined. Yet a console with a userbase around 4 million did a better job bringing in subscribers?

Its clear the real way to get subscribers is not letting people play games like CoD and BF online for free.

You actually do make a good point, PS Plus didn't substantially grow until PS4 required it for online, even with the years of great deals.

Xbox Live has been popular from the start because EVERYONE wanted to play Halo 2 online, there was no Netflix, Hulu Plus, HBO GO, Games with Gold etc. There was only Halo 2 bringing in those subscriptions. Then everything else became an added deal.

Sony gives away free games on ps+ for more than 3 years and they get 2 million userbase. Suddenly they put multiplayer behind a paywall and membership triples in under 2 months.
Therefore free games barely matter in gaining a userbase.
