Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is the 3DS SD Card read speed slower than the cart read speeds?

Tagged games:

So many Xbone thread derp. Anyways, I was thinking of DLing AC:NL but wondering if the SD card (packed in) has a slower reading speed than the cartridge. Don't really enjoy loading times.

If so, what are some good SD cards to get?

I don't know, I have a Philips SD - 8GB and it's fine to me

I only have 2 games (Mario 3D Land and Fire Emblem), both of them are on my SD card and I don't have any problems at all. Technically speaking, the game on the SD card should be faster, but I don't know for a fact.

Hm. I'll need to go and ask around then.

It's packed in card is probably slower. If you want a fast SD card to put games on, I'd recommend buying a Sandisk Extreme Pro. It isn't cheap, but at least it's assured to be faster than the cartridge.

And this is why a proprietary memory format is so important for a unified platform. I can not find any reference to how fast the game cartridges read, but like others have said, if you buy a high end SD card it should easily outperform the standard cart. Good luck, I think gaming from large local memory pools is the way of the future.

Hm...upon searching up some sites, Sandisk really is the way to go. Maybe I'll get a 8GB one to be safe. I have no use for 32 GB or anything that large.

All my games are asside from SM3DL were downloaded, and I haven't noticed any significant load times. I have a 16GB SanDisk SDHC card now, not sure if that makes any difference, but even when I used the pack in SD card, load times were not an issue. The most notable loading experience I can think of is that it takes a second or two for all the icons to pop up on the home menu, but that's a non-issue.

Well I've needed an SD card for quite a while now to rip some of my Wii games so I can dolphin them.

Wondering if I needed a faster SD card for my 3DS to boot, but it seems load times aren't actually quite that different so I'll just get a decent class 10 card and be done with it.

Glad to see that load times aren't an issue with the regular one though.

Does anyone know if using a micro SDHC adpater makes it any slower, it's a 32GB Sandisk micro SDHC.
