Provided the next Star Wars isn't crap, it will make more than the two Star Trek films combined easily.

Star Wars is a far bigger, more mainstream franchise, if it's a high quality film it will crush $1 billion worldwide easily and $400+ million domestic as well.

Star Wars will have the bigger audience but Star Trek 2 will be a better movie.

Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic:  $257,730,019    66.8%
Foreign:  $127,950,427    33.2%
Worldwide:  $385,680,446

That is for Star Trek Reboot. It beat everything but the first prequel of Star Wars. Blew Clone Wars out of the Water. Whoo! J/K But it did.

Uh, you do realize you're only using the domestic (US box office) grosses for Star Wars but using the worldwide gross for Star Trek, right? A little unfair.

Star Trek honestly was crap IMO anyway, the script was garbage from the Transformers writers, it was "fun" because of the characters.

Abrams basically turned Star Trek into Star Wars, so let him make what he really wanted to work on in the first place -- Star Wars.

Star Wars by some distance, I personally will be watching the films as soon as possible and very probably really enjoying them

No competition here. Star Wars is the bigger franchise. I surely will watch Ep. 7-9, I grew up with Star Wars :D

But these days things are different than they were in the 80's or even 90's. TNG was killing the movie Series after First contact. There was not much else that could done to save Star Trek besides modernizing it. The last new series just about tanked and was only left on the air because nothing else was doing that great on the station either. A big budget make over is what it needed and what it got. I thought it was pretty good. Spock was on his ass shocked when .....arrived again. Then he got him to stand down, and he took over. Great stuff imo!

I didn't like it. Star Trek should remain Star Trek, don't turn into some brainless action adventure franchise. There's enough of those.

They should make a new Star Trek TV show in the vein of The Next Generation with more modern effects and longer story arcs with high quality writers.

Star Trek 2 will make alot of money but it ain't got shit on Star wars. The newest Star Trek was an amazing success and still didn't make squat compared to Episode 3.

They're on completely different levels.

Hear, hear. Soundwave, I agree with everything you wrote. Alas, I think that Trek as we knew it is all but dead. So I don't expect a new TV show anytime soon. If it comes at all, it will probably follow this "alternaverse" mythology.

Star Trek 2 will do well, but I hope with Abrams leaving and doing what he really wants to do (Star Wars), a third Star Trek movie flops.

Star Trek needs to go back to its roots with a good quality SCIENCE FICTION TV show. Special effects and TV writers are so much better nowadays when you look at things like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones ... get some great writers and make a new Star Trek TV show and then expand that into a film series in time.

I think AMC would be a great partner to go with for example.
