"Apple, based in Cupertino, California, sued Samsung in April 2011, and Samsung countersued as part of a battle being waged on four continents over a smartphone market valued at $219.1 billion according to Bloomberg Industries. The companies have also sued each other in the U.K., Australia and South Korea.

Questions over damages awards were among the more than 600 questions the jury was asked to address. Apple sought $2.5 billion to $2.75 billion for its claims that Suwon, South Korea- based Samsung infringed four design patents and three software patents in copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung's demand for as much as $421.8 million in royalties was based on claims that Apple infringed five patents.

Apple also wants to make permanent a preliminary ban it won on U.S. sales of a Samsung tablet computer and extend the ban to Samsung smartphones. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh, who presided over the San Jose trial, would decide that question herself without the jury".

This is bad news and sets a very bad precedent. The last time Apple tried this they lost and ended up having to pay MS. Today's jury was probably padded with iPhone users who probably think Apple invented touch screens. I can't tell you how disappointed I am. Android is better than iOS and together they push technology forward. Hopefully Samsung will be able to appeal to a higher court and get this overturned.

It's fine. The phones and tablets that Samsung are selling now are unaffected and, even if they can't appeal, this is more like a big one time charge.

It would have been more dangerous if Samsung's patents were able to be asserted, because they submitted them to a standards process under FRAND terms. See Rambus vs ever DRAM memory company for how that turns out.

apple needs to die

Apple relies on Samsung to make their components, so id imagine this will be a bigger problem for Apple, rather than Samsung.

But we'll see.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

This is fucking disgusting. Apple hasn't invented anything. Pretty much ever. They take ideas other had, put them together, and claim them as their own. What's even worse is their ludicrous patents. Do you know that they had a patent for using the Pythagorean theorem to measure a distance between two points of interaction or something like that? That's a fucking 3-millennia old result that apple got a patent for. Fuck apple.
What also pisses me off is the public perception of apple. Everyone thinks they're this righteous company whom everyone copies. Really people? You think iPhone was the first smartphone? Or a first touch-screen device? Apple deserves to be plunged into the deepest bowels of bankruptcy for their fucked up behaviour.

Apple are too big and too powerful, they overcharge for crappy products that people buy for how "hip" they are.

WTF are you people talking about?

Do some research and look at the phones which were sued and patents that Apple sued them with. Looking at the phones in question, Samsung "willingly" copied the Iphone and its features.

People that know me know that I don't like Apple but I hate seeing lack of common sense.

reminds me of the wii :P.

It's not like google is much less powerful or (evil) with it's android OS... And it's not like the above picture doesn't look like it's copied from apple either.

I have a gaming PC, an ancient phone and use linux for some things, it's not like I like apple much. But google's just as bad.

Except the Wii had great games while Apple has great nothing. :p

It is an obvious copy, but frankly, Apple deserve to be ripped off, it's not like they ever come up with anything original.
