Forums - Gaming Discussion - Kinect Vs. Move: One Year Later

It's been about one year since Microsoft and Sony both released their respective motion controllers, Kinect for Xbox 360 and Move for PlayStation 3.

For sales, Microsoft reported in March 2011 it has shipped 10 million Kinect units worldwide since launch. It has not provided an update since. U.S. retail tracking firm NPD reported this month that 750,000 Kinects were sold during the week of Black Friday. Sony announced at E3 2011 it has shipped 8.8 million PlayStation Move controllers worldwide since launch, but has not provided an updated sales figure since.

For a closer look at each platform, Game Informer worked with Electronic Entertainment Design and Research (EEDAR) for data on software, including average review scores, total release count, and release count by genre. The data includes a look at software titles with required Move and Kinect controls (Dance Central, Sports Champions) as well as optional (LittleBigPlanet 2, Forza 4).

The results have been posted below:

EEDAR notes that titles with optional Kinect and Move controls reviewed higher than those with required controls. Additionally, Microsoft released more Kinect-required titles in the year while Sony released substantially more Move optional games.

Both platforms saw over half of their software titles in the year released during the holiday months. Average review scores for holiday titles were also higher than non-holiday titles.

Below are the top 5 highest reviewed games for both Kinect and Move that had required and optional controls. The review score is an average:

Very interesting read.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I think there should be some kind of explanation for the "optional" part. All Kinect will do with ME3 next year is two functions, yet it'll be counted towards that list. That's just unfair in comparison to the work Move does in being a secondary shooting component in KZ3 and Resistance 3. But that's just me.

Said it once and I'll say it again: The move is very underappriciated.

You might as well include some more updated info, as in Kinect Adventures as at 14 million sold now, and will be close to 15 mill when the new numbers come in.

BOOM!  FACE KICK!

Its because people have already tried controller-motion with the wii... and kinect appealed more because of its first controller-free theme...

Yay!!!

What a Muffed up list. For one Def jam and PGA12 don't even have kinect compatibility. Second LBP2 and Forza 4 both have a 91 rating not 90. If they got simple stuff like that wrong I can't take this data seriously.

Well you gotta give that credit to the Eyetoy. But Kinect is in a different ballpark park than Eyetoy.

Move is definitely perceived as a Wiimote clone. Worst of all it has little to offer that demonstrates how its superior to the Wiimote.
