Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U Discs Will Be 25GB In Size

This may be fine now....but by 2018 I think even 25GB may not be enough.

I'm pretty sure that by the time 2018 rolls around, Nintendo will be showing off the Wii U's successor, and I seriously doubt game developers will get to the point that they require multiple 25GB or Blu-Ray discs for games.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

wow @ the 8gb of storage -_-. Not for me thats for sure.

So buy a 2 TB HDD for $50 when it launches.

Thats a waste of money when they could just put it in and charge the same ammount themselves. The more news that keeps coming out about the wiiu, the less i am intised to buy it.

Oh please. You were never 'enticed' by it in the first place.

Don't mind him. He just comes into the Nintendo threads to downplay little things like storage space (he's living in the past, Storage shouldn't be a problem anymore).

Why did they choose 25GB if its not a "custom" blu-ray disk? Why not 26 or 30? I find this a little interesting, is it really a dvd?

Every PS3 game is on a single layered blu-ray disk (25GB) because developers have not needed any more space. MGS4 and FFXIII are the only games to use a dual layer disk. FFXIII was 38GB in size. So I really doubt there will ever be a PS3 game that is on more than one disk because the Blu-ray format has not been optimized like the dvd has(because there is no use for it, yet)

The way the data is written to the disc and the density of the pits on the disc are what determine the capacity.   26 or 30 GB just doesn't work.   It's like saying why can't 1 foot be 13 inches.

Curious: how much did FF XIII use up?

According to this site, 18.3 GB on the 360 and 38 GB on the PS3.

Very interesting.  So could WiiU technically afford FFXIII too, if they wanted to port it there, too?

No reason at all the Wii U couldn't have FF XIII ported over.   To be more blunt, not a single non-exclusive game released or in development (publicly known) could not be put on Wii U.

Yeah... Interestingly if there wasn't a 360 version there would be people using the 38 GB PS3 version as ammo to say the Wii U is already outdated...

The thing with storage is that you tend to use as much as you have. If developers have 50 GB on the PS3 they'll tend to use anything which fits there except if it's too slow to load. So you'll probably see a few Wii U games approaching 25 GB even if they could easily be done with, say, 10 GB.

i dont understand why you guys have to get so pissy about everything. Its quite pathetic. I go to the forums to add my thoughts and any discussion is fine, but shit like this really makes me not want to post anymore. Thats just the way it is on the nintendo forums, you cant post anything that against the the almighty 8gb nintendo system lol

You are shitting me right? USB HDD is cheap as shit these days, and Nintendo is doing us a favor by not releasing like 2-3 SKUs at once to rip people off, how can you bitch about that? What do you think I did when I got my PS3? I tossed a 500GB HDD right in there that didn't cost me an arm and a leg, that's one reason I like the PS3 better than the 360 as well. The casual won't need that space right away, and those of us who know better will have a drive just laying around already.

Its true, its really easy for me to get space. Im not saying i wont buy the wiiU because of this, i am saying though that they can easy just have 1 sku with 120gb. And charge the same ammount that they were if it has 8gb. Its like you said, its super cheap.

Youa are confusing HDD's with flash memory.  8 GB's of flash memory (far faster than a HDD) would cost Nintendo about $5.  But 128 GB's would easily cost another $75.  An internal 128 GB HDD is rarely manufactured anymore and because of that would cost almost as much as the flash memory.   The prefect balance is to offer a starting point that is both very fast and large enough to gain an apprciation for just how much space you think you'll need.  Then you can purchase at your leisure the capacity that will suit you best.

Go take a look at HDD and flash memory price structure today.   You'll see why it makes more sense to handle it this way.

By 8gb i mean internal storage. Meaning the Hard drive. Is that right? If it is, then i am at a dissapoint.
