Every year between Christmas and New Year's eve I make a 500 miles long drive just to watch a movie in IMAX. It's a yearly tradition that I do, to just clear my head and do a bit of a retrospective of the year, on my own. Whatever is at the cinema I will watch it. This year it was Avatar 2. I have to admit it, it was still a far better choice than last year's Mufasa. |
Damn, 500 miles? I assume that's round trip at least, you would need a sleepover at the theater otherwise!
The last movie I bothered to drive to IMAX for was Interstellar, was only a 40 minute drive too. Oddly the appeal of driving a long time (to clear my head) is greater than sitting in a cinema watching a 3 hour spectacle. Turn the music up and enjoy the changing scenery.
Anyway the last time I really enjoyed a James Cameron movie was Terminator 2. I did go watch Titanic in IMAX (which was just 35mm on a bigger screen at the time) but it still dragged on. |
Yup, it's a round trip :D And I can agree with T2. It's probably the last Cameron movie I consider to be a great all-around movie. It's the pinackle of that eras action sci-fi trend. Titanic, while it was huge for it's time, not quite my cup of tea.

That's a really cool tradition - I love both driving and IMAX showings. Luckily, I have an IMAX about 20 minutes by commuter train from where I live, but I do sometimes take a longer trip to a 4DX theater the next city over. The Dune movies are the epitome of IMAX experiences for me, and I'm planning on watching Avatar 3 on IMAX as well. |
For whatever reason 4DX became way more popular around here compared to IMAX. We have a bunch of them, including one at the mall a couple of blocks from me. I do like those as well, especially for soapy sci-fi and mainstream horror movies where I go mostly for the giggles.
