Things have changed dramatically since the PS360 days. Bayonetta's sales are 100% affected by being locked to Switch. Arguing against this is bizarre. Monster Hunter was niche in the west before World, and look how much it grow when it was no longer restricted by the 3DS. Devil May Cry and NieR massively grew as well. Bayonetta can significantly grow as a multiplatform title if the quality remains high. Like Ninja Gaiden almost certainly will if the new game arrives in solid form. It's just common sense that making your game available on a larger install base will help it sell more and potentially explode in popularity. |
Sales don't necessarily scale in line with install base though. Plus, if you severed ties with Nintendo as publisher, you'd have to find another publisher who'd take a risk on a bankrolling a niche IP; Sega famously shelved Bayonetta 2 back in the day when it was in development as a multiplatform project, and Platinum have gone on record as saying the game wouldn't exist at all without Nintendo's intervention.
Bayonetta is a very intentionally weird IP that just isn't very mainstream in its appeal.
