I think gens are a pre video game crash thing. There was a dizzying amount of consoles out in the market back then. It may have been a helpful categorization to separate it into first-gen consoles and second gen (mostly defined by some quality of life features, like the introduction of cartridges and detached controllers instead of PCB or hard-coded games and controls on the console itself). Post crash the amount was small enough, that you could compare directly the few competitors.
