Aside from the fact that Switch sales may not look as impressive to some if they aren't combined, I don't see why this seems so crazy.
If you wanted to say they play the same games, well some games cross platforms, so do sales of those other platforms, for those specific games, count as well?
It's not like there's a blatantly obvious and distinct cut off, but allowing a handheld and console to be considered the same, basically means all hardware sales for any platform that can play some of the same games should be combined into one.
I myself don't really agree with that, but that's just me.

PS3 - #- We must build a console that’s powerful, social, costs and does everything.
PS4 - $- We must build a console that’s affordable, charges for services, and pumps out exclusives.
PRO -%-We must build a console that's VR ready, checkerboard upscales, and sells but a fraction of the money printer.
PS5 - ^ -We must build a console that’s a generational cross product, with RT lighting, and price hiking.
PRO -&- We must build a console that Super Res upscales and continues the cost increases.
