Well, look at the chart of the best-selling games (on console as this is what VGC tracks really):

http://www.vgchartz.com/gamedb/

Wii only takes five out of the TOP 10 slots.

Right, and 3 of those are Wii Sports related (at least I assume Wii Play is in the same vein as Wii Sports as I never played it).

That's the sort of evidence that further lends me to think that the Wii itself as a system was mainly a Wii Sports machine for lots of people who bought it.

Whatever, Wii Sports sold the system, that's right. Still the people bought Mario Kart and Smash. Twilight Princess is either best selling or second best selling Zelda-game (I don't really know if OOT wins). Mario Kart Wii is the best selling Mario Kart. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the third selling Mario game (Mario Bros on NES and New Super Mario Bros on DS were the only ones that did better). Brawl is the best selling Smash Bros. So yes, Wii Sports was selling the Wii, but that still means a lot of games besides Wii Sports were purchased after that.

Even the legendary PS2 that has sold 50% more consoles has it's first entry on 17. So clearly Wii sold games.
