Great movie. I wouldnt say its underperdorming. More a case of trades not understanding that movies like It and Deadpool attract all kinds of crowds, most notably females and frat boys. Such Millenials probably dont even know about Blade Runner.
WB should never have given it a $150m budget though. As people have mentioned, Blade Runner is a cult classic.
2049 isnt a mindless action film like Deadpool, so it was never going to pull in an opening greater than $50m. Even It transcends different demographics. 2049 isnt going to appeal to too many outside of 25+ year old males.
It will do great on bluray.
