It is a shrinking market compared to all of those markets.

Of course it is still 2nd and important, but thats not the point of my post. UK threads can get this toxic, but rarely. France and Germany threads never do. US is the most important market and the NPD threads are monthly but doesn't have 4 times as much pettiness as these threads.

Isn't the EU usually seen as one market though. Sure they are a number of individual countries. But in general their economy and taste in gaming is pretty much the same. Same goes for USA and Canada a.k.a. the North American market. Which is still (by far) the biggest than EU and after that Japan. Asia is to much divided in both taste and market to fuse in one market. But as individual country it's still very relevant, but compared to EU it's rather small. That's why there are games targeted at the EU market and the Japanese market, but in general games targeted at EU and in lesser or more ways targeted at the NA market such as Horizon sell more WW. So Splatoon winning in Japan doesn't necessarily mean that it will win globally. But Crash outselling Splatoon in UK with bigger launch sales than Horizon does indicate it most likely will do better WW.

The tastes in europe are very different. UK tending to lean more MS and generally mirroring US. A few countries (including germany) leaning heavily PC. A division between more Nintendo-countries and more Sony-countries. The european market is pretty diverse. Crash sales in UK don't indicate at all how the game does throughout europe. The only reason they are lumped together is that they are so small compared to US and Japan.
