Yes, this is a "reboot" of sorts.  Takes the concept and story, but done in a series with many aspects updated.

 That's interesting. The movie from 1973 was pretty cool. I think the setting can work in a longer story.

I just realized the original movie from '73 was directed by Michael Crichton.
